‘Never Played Him Again…’: Tiger Woods Silenced a Zealous Phil Mickelson in Front of Jack Nicklaus, Who Once Recalled the Fascinating Tale

Two names from the golf world, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, are often taken together. We have heard many stories of their rivalry and many levels of their fun friendship. Once legendary golfer, Jack Nicklaus, shared the most incredible story of all time…a story that involved the two legends.

During an interview in 2018, Jack Nicklaus revealed an unexpected yet enjoyable story of Mickelson and Woods, which involves a very fun match of ping-pong.

Mickelson was distracted by food while playing ping-pong with Woods!

We have seen Woods and Mickelson getting closer over the years and getting apart, too. These longtime friends cum rivals played a practice round together at Augusta National in 2003. It was a delight for a golf fans eyes, according to Nicklaus, and he added another moment to it.

In 2018, one of the greatest golfers of all time, Jack Nicklaus appeared on ‘The Masters’ YouTube channel’. There he revealed the story of when Mickelson and Woods went head-to-head for a ping-pong match. Nicklaus mentioned that something curious yet unexpected happened. He saw the former PGA Tour member and current PGA Tour member sitting together on the bus. They both entered the cabin that had a ping-pong table. He said, “that’s curious because I hadn’t seen them much the last year, and they talked all the way out.”

Mickelson suggested a friendly match of ping-pong. Woods agreed and won the first two matches by defeating Mickelson. He did not like losing the game, so he offered to switch ends. Because, according to Mickelson, the reason he was unable to win was a buffet behind him. After the beating, they played again, and this time Mickelson actually won.

Woods walked out on prompt of playing again by the LIV golf member. He said‘Phil, two to one.’ And after that, they never played a ping-pong match again that week. Nicklaus said, “And he never played him again the rest of the week.”

Mickelson vs Tiger Woods : the better golfer?

We know Woods as the G.O.A.T. who took took golf to a global level. The former No.1 has won 15 major championships and 82 PGA Tour titles. But Mickelson isn’t that far away from him. In contrast, the former PGA Tour member has won 6 Majors and 45 PGA Tour titles. It doesn’t end here; these pros also have played together and won a major championship. 

This was an impressive record from the golfers. Their bond was strong despite all rivalries. They have been competing since Woods turned pro in 1996.
