The talks of the PGA Tour-LIV Golf merger are making many waves in the news, and it has sent many golfers into a frenzy of emotions. The deal with Saudi Arabia’s wealth fund has been revealed to include only a handful of binding commitments, including the dismissal of the legal fights. And one of the golfers who was visibly happy with the merger between the PGA Tour and the Saudi-backed league was Phil Mickelson.

Being a LIV Defector, he had much to say as the merger came to light. Although the finer details are unknown, Lefty divulged some of the changes that the PGA Tour will undergo, including what will be “crucial” for the “long term”!

Phil Mickelson opens up about the team aspect post-merger

The 53-year-old golfer has been pretty vocal about his support of LIV Golf since he jumped ship to the Saudi-backed league in 2022. And in the recent press conference ahead of the LIV Golf event in Bedminster, he was seen talking about some of the changes that might hit the Jay Monahan-led PGAT as the merger is happening, the biggest of which was the team element!

Replying to the question of whether there will be a team element to the post-merger entity, Mickelson talked about how the aspect of squad play was one of the main reasons why the demographics of the PIF-funded league were half those of the PGA Tour. “I think that’s going to be crucial to the long-term support of the game of golf,” he said. Lefty mentioned that the feature of teams would bring a whole new way to identify with the younger crowd.

The team aspect of the game would not have come about without the inception of LIV Golf. Moreover, the American Golf Pro expressed how the Saudi-backed league is leading the way in the merger as they have proved to possess the ability to guarantee the player’s presence and work on the squad facet of the game.

Speaking his mind on the importance of LIV Golf, he mentioned how there was a dearth of instances where the top golfers could play with each other in the same events until the elevated events came. And the PIF-funded league, being an elevated one with a squad feature, brought about a big change where fans were able to see the best players play against each other.

Surprisingly, proposals for such changes were made just a few weeks ago, and they came from none other than Mickelson himself.

All these changes are in line with what Mickleson always hoped for on the Tour

While many think money was the only factor in Mickelson’s shift to LIV, that is certainly not the case. In the past, the golf legend has often reiterated how he jumped ship because the Tour was resistant to change. However, his move in turn led to the rise of the Saudi Tour and, ironically, change on the PGA Tour. In fact, many of the current changes the Tour now sees are in line with what Lefty proposed years ago.

In the interview, he also mentioned how the moves the Tour is now making are what he had often proposed in the past in the meetings he had had with the Tour Commissioner. “All the notes I look back on, I’d say 85 or 90 percent of them are happening,” he stated. “I think that’s really cool, and I’m happy for the PGA Tour.”

It seems like the golf legend has inspired the change that golf is witnessing today. Nevertheless, one can only hope that the finer details of the amalgamation of the leagues can bring about even more fairness and satisfaction for every golfer.
