Greg Norman is a well known name in the golf world, especially after his LIV Golf endeavour. He was also the World number one for 331 weeks in the 1980s and 1990s. The owner of over $300 million worth of the company did not become successful overnight. His hard work and dedication made him the ‘great white shark’ of golf. However, everyone needs a little nudge to progress towards their goals; the same was the case for Norman.

He has had his share of ups and downs but has always come out stronger. And while dealing with the downs in life, he learned a couple of important life lessons. Many incidents in his life reflect the reason why he is so dedicated. In 2006, he published his book, ‘The Way of the Shark: Lessons on Golf, Business and Life,’ TODAY invited him to discuss the book. In the interview, he shared a crazy story and the lesson learned from it.

The lesson that made Greg Norman a millionaire

Norman walked back to his childhood days and narrated a story that taught him the value of not taking shortcuts. During childhood, ‘the White Shark’ of golf had horses kept in the paddock behind his home. For security, a barbed wire surrounded the paddock. Therefore, to get to the horses, he had to ride his bike over three miles to reach the main gate. However, he wanted to make things less tiring. “Well, one day I decided there was an easier way. I took a pair of wire cutters and cut a hole in the fence big enough for me to squeeze through,” said Norman.

He successfully squeezed in, took his horse, and rode out of the paddock through the main gate. But he could not enjoy it for a longer time. He was trying to make his life more accessible; instead, he was caught, and his parents had to get involved. Talking about the repercussion, the major championship winner said, “The consequences of my actions involved some pretty tough punishment.” Although the punishment came with a lesson, “the entire episode taught me not to take shortcuts.”

As a punishment, the former number-one golfer had to repair the hole in the fence all by himself. And it was not an undemanding job because he had damaged the tension wire while making the hole. The lesson he learned still sticks with him. Since LIV Golf has yet to receive complete acceptance from everyone, he has been trying hard to get OWGR rights to his players without shortcuts.
