And Rory McIlroy entered the tournament strong with a win at the recent Scottish Open and will look to finish at the top as the tournament reaches its climax on Sunday.

But this time around, the tournament might prove to be a bit handful for the Northern Irish golfer, as he was seen having an up-and-down day at the course during the third round. Moreover, in a recent press conference, he revealed a surprising truth about his on-field rhythm, which was “stuck in neutral” at the championship, leaving many of his fans startled.

Rory McIlroy admits his mistakes at the FedEx St. Jude Championship

Coming in strong into the tournament at No. 3 in the FedEx Cup ranking, McIlroy was only able to dish out an okay performance in the first two rounds, scoring a 3-under 67 and a 66 (-4) respectively. But the third day turned out to be incredibly disappointing for the Irishman, as he was seen regretting the choices that he made on the round, which led him to a performance of 2-under 68.

Acknowledging his mistakes in the recent presser, he said, “I feel like I’ve sort of been stuck in neutral a little bit this week, and I’m still in a decent position”. But, he was hopeful, as depending on how the top in the scoreboard performs, he might still be able to catch up and make a run for the title and the trophy.

McIlroy’s chance to reach No. 1

The Irishman will be looking to finish at the top in order to reclaim the top spot in the Official World Golf Rankings. Earlier this year, he was unable to take back the top spot from Scottie Scheffler as he could only finish at the 6th position in the 2023 Open Championship settling for 278 (-6). The golfer is currently at the 2nd spot in the OWGR and will be able to achieve this feat if he wins the championship and at the same time, if Scheffler is tied at 5th or below.

McIlroy will be aiming for a replica of his win at the FedEx Cup in 2022, where he took home the cup and prize money of $18 million. He beat the 27-year-old Scheffler to score a total of 21-under-par 261 to claim the title. As he enters the fourth and final round on Sunday, he will hope to put up a better performance and hopefully finish at the top.
