‘A Big Deal’: In an Attempt to Justify the Controversial Ball Rollback Rule, Tour Loyalist Rory McIlroy Compares Golf With Tennis and Other Sports

In recent weeks, there has been one chief topic of discussion throughout the golf world: the rollback. The new rule caused an uproar among the majority of pros around the world. But a few stand apart from them and support the decision, and Rory McIlroy is among them. The former world no. 1 recently even spoke up about how other sports had successfully pulled off something similar in the past, hoping to convince the rest of his colleagues that the move was beneficial.

Rory McIlroy is all about the rollback

To settle the distance issue that has arisen with the sport, the R&A, and the USGA proposed a Model Local Rule (MLR) last week, giving event organizers the option of making pros use golf balls that don’t travel as far as regular ones for elite events. This, of course, caused many pros to erupt and voice their views against the matter. But McIlroy stands apart from them all.

The golf pro believes that the rollback could be a good thing. He recently even sat down for an exclusive interview with No Laying Up to discuss the matter. During the talk, the 23-time PGA Tour winner mentioned how golf wasn’t the only sport to adopt such a measure.

Mentioning tennis, the golf pro pointed out how successful their version of the rollback was. They had “slowed the ball down,” and made the grass “a little stickier,” and it had worked out great for them. “They didn’t make a big deal of it,” he claimed. “It’s another example of another sport slowing the ball down and making some changes that I think has certainly benefited that sport.”

McIlroy believes golf could benefit from the new rule option

The four-time major championship winner further mentioned that baseball also had seen somewhat of a similar change. “People can talk about, in this country, about going from an aluminum baseball bat in college to going to a wooden bat in the pros,” he stated. “This isn’t unique to golf, this happens in other sports as well.”

The golf-pro claimed that if slowing the ball down and making minor changes to the game were successful in the past for tennis and baseball, then it could be true for golf as well. He was certain that it could prove to be quite beneficial for the future of the game.
