After more than a decade of association, Tiger Woods and caddie Joe LaCava, are no longer behind each other’s backs. The 68-year-old caddie has temporarily stepped down from his role and will caddie Patrick Cantlay for the foreseeable future. It’s a story that seems eerily similar to the one that caused friction between Woods and his former caddie, Steve Williams. But will history repeat itself?

Joe LaCava’s venture into troubled waters

Having worked with Woods since 2011, the renowned caddie has decided to carry the bags of 2021 FedEx Cup winner, Patrick Cantlay, for the upcoming Wells Fargo Championship. According to various sources, the move will last for more than just one event, with a foray into the whole season a likely possibility.

But does LaCava’s switch all but confirm Woods’ retirement from the sport? Fortunately, the caddie cleared the air at a media gathering recently.

“We’re still very tight,” LaCava said about his relationship with Woods. “It wasn’t like it ended where he’s healthy and going to play a full schedule. It’s a different set of circumstances. It was still a tough call. But like Fred [Couples] 10 or 12 years ago, I’d like to think we’re still going to be good friends, text back and forth, whatever.”

Tiger Woods and Steve Williams’ controversial exit

LaCava’s words served as a timely reminder of his relationship with Woods, who has been through controversial caddie splits before. The golfer partnered with Kiwi caddie Steve Williams during his most dominant run of form, where he captured the majority of his major championships.

However, Williams lost Woods’ trust after the golfer’s much-publicized divorce. Having initially claimed that he’ll be temporarily working with Aussie golfer Adam Scott, the 59-year-old received the shock of his life when Woods made a public announcement of their unceremonious exit.

In his own words, LaCava has argued that the situation is different from that of Williams. But do you think the American caddie will get back with Woods once the legendary golfer recuperates himself? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
