Defecting to LIV golf came with perks like bigger purses and huge signing bonuses. But the pros who jumped ship also had to face dire consequences. Aside from the backlash from the public and the bans from the PGA Tour and the European Tour, they suffered one more harsh blow. The players face a potential lifelong ban from international events like the Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup. Among those saddened by this decision is an Northern Irish veteran pro who recently announced his dismay.

The Ryder Cup is one of the most prestigious international vents in the golf world. Since it is unlikely that any of the LIV golf players will be permitted to represent their side in the event, many have come out to voice their concerns.

LIV Golf player voices his dejection

Ahead of the International Series Oman on the Asian Tour, LIV Golf defector Graeme McDowell spoke to the media about the Ryder Cup. As per Golf Magic, the 43-year-old claimed that every European player dreams of playing in the Ryder Cup. He added that every player who did play in it would attest to it being “one of more memorable experiences” of their lives.

The golf pro claimed that he too loved every minute of his Ryder Cup experiences. And he does have quite a few. He’s represented the international team four times, and in 15 matches, he’s scored nine points. In 2010, he even made the winning shot to beat the American side 14 1/12 to 13 1/12.

The Ryder Cup almost kept McDowell from jumping ship

Fans have wondered, then, if McDowell felt so deeply about the Ryder Cup, why did he jump ship? Well, he almost didn’t. “It was one of the factors I considered important in making the decision to join LIV,” she stated. “I was walking away from one the chance to be a Ryder Cup vice-captain or captain.” But it seems like the pros of joining LIV outweighed the cons in this case.

Perhaps that’s the reason that the Northern Irishman is more at ease with not competing in the international event than his fellow LIV golfers. He had considered all the aspects of jumping ship before making the choice. And now the four-time PGA Tour winner only looks ahead and refuses to dwell on what-ifs.
