The 30-year-old will be defending her title in the first competition of the season, which bolsters a strong roster on the field. However, before the proceedings began, Kang had an on-camera meet-up with legendary golfer Annika Sorenstam in a Q&A session at Boxi Park.

Hilton Grand Vacations, the primary sponsor for the Tournament of Champions, alongside Sorenstam’s Annika Foundation, sponsored the event. Founded in 2007, the association provides golf opportunities to young kids at a grassroots level.
Despite rising to stardom herself, Kang remains an ardent fan of Sorenstam. The 2017 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship winner reportedly said, “When Annika calls, you answer so here I am,” when asked about her appearance days before the season’s kick-off.
Sorenstam’s foundation posted pictures of the small gathering on their social media handles, with the woman herself praising Kang’s arrival. “Thank you @daniellekang for coming for our #MoreThanGolf session last night and inspiring these young girls to follow their dreams!” Sorenstam said after sharing it on her Twitter account.

Last year before the same tournament, Kang once again captured news headlines alongside Sorenstam. While speaking on how she would spend time relaxing to maintain peace, the two-time U.S. Women’s Amateur winner recalled watching the former great play.
Incidentally, Sorenstam was playing a group behind Kang’s at the event. For the fan inside her, it was Kang’s first sighting of her idol’s exploits in real match-play action. “Never really seen her play in tournament mode,” she said, “so I was fangirling out there.”
The Diamond Resorts Tournament of Champions kicks off the brand-new LPGA Tour season. The prize money for the event stands at $1.5 million and will be played at the Lake Nona Golf Course.
