MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Mexican Esteban Gutierrez will race for the new U.S.-owned Haas F1 team next season after being officially appointed on Friday. Hass said the 24-year-old Ferrari reserve driver, who raced for Sauber in 2013 and 2014, will join Frenchman Romain Grosjean in the Ferrari-powered team that makes its debut in 2016. The news was entirely expected and seen as Formula One’s worst-kept secret. “This is an excellent opportunity that builds on my time with Ferrari and I will make the most of it,” Gutierrez said after being presented at Mexico City’s Soumaya Museum. “Gene Haas believes in me and I believe in how he’s going about competing in Formula One. To have a race seat in a competitive car with Ferrari power is very special, and I appreciate the faith he has in me.” (Reporting by Alan Baldwin, editing by Peter Rutherford)

The Haas F1 team are one of the newer kids on the block. They joined Formula One in 2016 with <a href="https://www.essentiallysports.com/tag/romain-grosjean/">Romain Grosjean</a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esteban_Guti%C3%A9rrez">Esteban Gutierrez</a> as their drivers.

Since they are one of the newer teams, there is no real history to speak of. However, the team rose from the ashes of a failed bid to get a US F1 team in 2010. They bear no relation to the Haas Lola team of the 1985-86 season.

When Marussia collapsed in 2014, Haas bought their factory to use as a base of operations.

They endured a difficult campaign the following season, with the team struggling to get to grips with the VF-19. Kevin Magnussen produced some scintillating qualifying performances but failed to translate the same into concrete results on Sundays.

Ultimately, the team ended up ninth in the Constructors' Championship.

Unfortunately, they are yet to turn their fortunes around in F1. The team scored only three points in the 2020 season.

To date, their best ever result has been fourth place the 2018 Austrian GP. However, they were unlucky to have pitstop mishaps in the opening races squander their chances. Later on, rivals, Renault got stronger and more consistent. In the end, they had to settle for fifth in the championship.

It is also interesting to note that the team was involved in a controversy regarding their partnership with Ferrari. Many teams were under the impression that they had a significant advantage. It didn?t help matters when claims were made that their 2018 car mostly resembled Ferrari?s 2017 model.

For a long time, Bernie Ecclestone was the F1 supremo, having founded the Formula One Group. He?spent 40 years as chief executive of the company after gaining control of the commercial rights.

But in 2017, he stepped down and ownership was handed to Liberty Media who have been taking care of F1 since then. To herald their control, they even changed the F1 logo.

Chase Carey was the first F1 CEO in the 'liberty era' of F1 and will be stepping down at the end of the year. Former Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali will succeed the American in 2021.

After joining Haas, he has had up and down results and finished the championship in 13th twice. In 2018, he ended the season in 14th place. It was a shame because Haas had demonstrated that they had a strong car.

However, silly mistakes and other teams stepping up their game, cost Haas dearly.A year later, Haas F1 had not moved up the order, and their drivers' performances did not help.
