“Stick to Your Vision…”: $2,000,000,000 Michael Jordan Once Gave Derek Jeter the Ultimate Ownership Advice

Michael Jordan and Derek Jeter have a well-documented friendship. The two have known each other for nearly 30 years, from before Jeter made his MLB debut. Jordan took the New York Yankees legend under his wing, teaching him how to handle things on and off the court. This happens even today when Jeter has some questions. Jordan once shared some advice he gave the legendary shortstop as he embarked on an ownership journey. 

In September 2017, an ownership group, featuring Jeter, finalized a deal to buy the Miami Marlins. During that time, Jordan gave the Yankees legend his advice as an owner and CEO.

Michael Jordan owned the Charlotte Hornets from 2010 until he sold it recently. Although the team was not overly successful during his tenure, he still holds a sharp eye for business, selling at a massive profit. In 2017, shortly after Derek Jeter became the Marlins owner, $2 billion Jordan shared words of wisdom with his friend while appearing on the docuseries “The Captain.”

Jordan said, “Create your vision and stick to that vision. And if you believe in it, you’ll do all the necessary work that you need to do to make that vision happen.” These were the ultimate words of wisdom from one of the greatest Jordan to his close friend, Jeter. However, it did not work out for Jeter as the direction of the team changed over the years.

In February last year, he announced he was stepping down as Marlins CEO. The Yankees icon eventually sold his share in the team as well. Nonetheless, Jordan’s assistance extended beyond mere words of wisdom.

Jordan helped Jeter buy the Marlins

Following his retirement, Derek Jeter dreamt of owning an MLB team. With the assistance of Michael Jordan, he bought the Marlins in 2017. As the deal was getting close, Jeter fell short of money and turned to Jordan for help. The NBA icon helped his close friend with the required amount while also picking up a 1% ownership stake. It showed the closeness between the two as he helped Jeter achieve his dream.
