Derek Jeter was a highly successful player on the baseball diamond. He bid farewell to the ballpark as a player in 2014. But his passion for baseball made him stay connected with the sport beyond retirement. After retirement, he joined the ownership group of an MLB team.
Jeter turned into the Co-owner and CEO of the Miami Marlins in 2017. He even bid for a franchise takeover in partnership with the NBA icon Michael Jordan. A legendary player himself, Jordan too, turned into a franchise owner post-retirement.

Derek Jeter: The sudden end to a distant vision
Derek Jeter has been a proven sporting genius since his playing days. But he made some obscure blunders as the Marlins’ CEO and co-owner. One of his most criticized decisions was to trade off star slugger Giancarlo Stanton to the New York Yankees in 2018. Moreover, Jeter couldn’t bring much change to the Marlins’ fortunes as the seasonal struggles continued.

However, citing differences of opinion as a reason, Jeter decided to resign abruptly.
According to a source, Jeter released a statement about his decision stating, “Today I am announcing that the Miami Marlins and I are officially ending our relationship and I will no longer serve as CEO nor as a shareholder in the Club. We had a vision five years ago to turn the Marlins franchise around, and as CEO, I have been proud to put my name and reputation on the line to make our plan a reality. Through hard work, trust and accountability, we transformed every aspect of the franchise, reshaping the workforce, and developing a long-term strategic plan for success.”
