As a top-performing athlete, earning hundreds of thousands of dollars and achieving fame, Alex Rodriguez was no stranger to the spotlight. However, with success comes unwanted attention from those looking to profit off of their wealth.

In 1998, while still a shortstop for the Seattle Mariners, Rodriguez was faced with the unfortunate reality of having his home robbed not once, but twice. And in a shocking turn of events, the first theft was committed by someone he actually knew. 

The burglaries in Rodriguez’s home:

As the rising shortstop reached new heights of success and fame, Alex Rodriguez became the target of burglars. The two burglaries no doubt left the baseball phenom reeling from the losses he incurred.

According to AP News, the first break-in resulted in the theft of cherished memorabilia including his 1996 All-Star game jersey, and personal gifts from fellow sports icons such as the Mariners’ Jay Buhner and the Miami Heat’s Tim Hardaway. Thankfully, these items were eventually recovered when A-Rod’s acquaintance, Ivan Latimore, tried to sell the items.

However, the second burglary proved to be even more devastating for Rodriguez. The burglars made off with an impressive haul of high-end luxury items. Including a collection of Giorgio Armani suits and a cashmere trench coat, valued at a staggering $43,000. They also took two Rolex watches. Three bottles of Remy Martin cognac that was valued at $1,270 each. Cigars worth $2,500. Baseballs, and a substantial amount of cash, totaling $25,000.

These losses not only represented a financial setback for Rodriguez. But also the loss of sentimental and irreplaceable items that held great personal value to him. 

Alex Rodriguez moved out of his home in Miami after the second theft 

After the second-heart wrenching burglary, Alex Rodriguez made the difficult decision to leave his Miami home behind. The betrayal he felt from the intrusion, and the loss of cherished possessions had left him feeling vulnerable and uncertain of whom he could trust. In a statement, he shared, “I don’t know who to trust anymore.” A-Rod added, “I’m probably going to put my house up for sale and move on. I don’t think I’ll be back.”

Unfortunately, the baseball icon’s troubles with theft did not end there. In recent years, specifically in 2019, Rodriguez fell victim to another theft. A thief stole jewelry and car equipment from his car while he was enjoying dinner out. This string of thefts serves as a stark reminder to all to be vigilant and take precautions out there!
