Derek Jeter had one of the most marvelous careers as a baseball player. His journey to the peaks of sporting success is ideal for any aspirant to follow. He laid the standards for a legacy worthy of the highest honors. Yet, his achievements were not illustrious enough, according to one baseball legend.

Derek Jeter played as the New York Yankees shortstop throughout his time span as a player. Sticking to his role, he became a 14-time All-Star and a five-time World Series champion. However, there was an iconic baseball stalwart whose stellar playing records were way ahead of Jeter in all aspects.

The late great Yogi Berra played MLB as a catcher for the Yankees and later for the New York Mets. A second world war veteran, Berra was remarkably an 18-time All-Star player who won 10 World Series championships as a player. He won another three trophies as a coach and a manager. Nonetheless, that didn’t stop Berra from taunting Jeter back in the day.

Derek Jeter scaled the heights and achieved milestones that most other players merely dream of. But according to Yogi Berra, Jeter was still lagging behind by a far margin. Jeter pointed out the massive differences between the eras that they both played. Regardless, Berra held his point and would never listen to Jeter’s reasoning.

Berra would always compare Jeter’s records with his own. It was a way of Berra having a verbal showdown with Jeter. The qualification rules for the World Series were much different in Berra’s time, as compared to when Jeter played. However, all that mattered to Berra was his rings.

Speaking on his conversations with Berra, Jeter once said, “Yogi Berra used to come in the locker room and, every time we won, he would come over and remind me of how many rings he had (Berra was a part of 10 World Champions). I used to joke with him and say, ‘Well, you know it’s a little bit harder now because there are more rounds in the playoffs. You went straight to the World Series.’ His response was, ‘You can come over my house and count the rings any time you want’.”
