

Alex Rodriguez’s entry to the New York Yankees had caused quite a stir because of the changing mentalities of the entire team. It is already proven not once but many times that one can play baseball as A-Rod did.

The player signed to the Yankees in 2004, after playing for the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers till 2003. In both the teams he played before, he had the reputation that everybody looked up to him.

Alex Rodriguez took nothing from any player
Everybody wants to be the best in their field, and so did Alex.
“He was concerned about putting numbers up,” said the former manager, Joe Torre, on Graham Bensinger‘s show. He thought that Alex worried more about his statistics than the entire team. Although, he thought that if he took care of his numbers, the wins will take care of themselves.

What Joe said might or might not be true, but the fact of the matter is, even if it was true, A-Rod never took anything from any player but built himself up. During the time he played for the other two teams, the other payers always looked up to him to be the leader. But the New York Yankees were different.

In the New York Yankees, there was no one leader, but every player on the team is equal to the other. There was no looking up to one person to be the leader, and the players were stable.

On being asked about the team’s mentality getting changed after Rodriguez in the team, the former manager, Joe Torre said, “Well we wanted to find a way to try to make him comfortable, and as he came from Texas and then Seattle, the other guys were sort of looking up to him to be the leader of the club. Well, he came with us, and everybody’s on that same level. So, you know, it was just a different mindset. I think that he had to get used to it.“

Torre had told Alex to not do everything by himself, as he pretty much did in the other teams he played. Although, in his book Torre mentioned, “Nobody has worked harder in my memory than this guy.“

All that Torre wanted as a manager for the team was to continue to share the wealth while playing together. He did not want A-Rod to take as much pressure on him as he did to do everything on his own.
