The late 90s and early 2000s were the golden eras for the New York Yankees. With manager Joe Torre at the helm, the Yankees dominated Major League Baseball for over ten years. Players like Roger Clemens, Derek Jeter, and a few others helped Torre win multiple titles for the Pinstripes.

However, during Torre’s managerial stint, some controversial incidents also happened that baseball fans will hardly forget. Recently, the former Yankees’ manager opened up about one of the most controversial incidents in the ballparks, when Roger Clemens tossed a broken bat at Mike Piazza during the 2000 World Series.

Although the Yankees triumphed over the Mets and won the 2000 World Series title, the Clemens-Piazza saga will be the biggest highlight of the seven-game series. Now, after 22 years of that controversial incident, Torre revealed Clemens cried after what happened in the diamond.

Recently, Joe Torre appeared in the latest episode of SNY’s ‘Like We Never Left.’ And the four-time World Series-winning manager opened up in detail about the controversial incident during the 2000 World Series.

Torre said when Clemens went to see Mel Stottlemyre—the then Yankees pitching coach—he started crying. Torre also recalled Clemens felt devastated after throwing the bat at Mike Piazza. Notably, Piazza was a crucial part of the New York Mets.

“After that half inning, Roger went into the office to see Mel. And Mel told me that he was crying on what he just transpired. Pitchers who have that passion, it leaks out all over the place,” said Joe Torre. “He (Roger) went in there. And he was devastated with the result of what had happened and was crying.”

However, the former Yankees ace, Roger Clemens, has never talked about the incident. In the end, the Yankees won the World Series title by defeating the Mets 4-1. The Joe Torre-led team also completed their hat-trick of the World Series titles.

If not for a couple of series against the Houston Astros, the New York Yankees have been the best team this season. With Aaron Judge leading from the plate and a fine pitching unit, the Pinstripes are the title favorite in 2022.
