Rodriguez had questioned the playing capacity of Jeter. The former Yankees’ shortstop had said that beating Jeter was never a concern. “He’s never had to lead,” Rodriguez said. “He doesn’t have to, he can just go and play and have fun, and hit second… You never say, ‘Don’t let Derek beat you.’ That’s never your concern.”
Reacting to Rodriguez’s comments, Jeter, in his documentary, clarified his stand and said that he would not have said something like that to a true friend. And it bothered him.
“I’m very, very loyal. As a friend, I’m loyal. I just looked at it as ‘I wouldn’t have done it. He’s not a true friend, is how I felt,” Jeter said in “The Captain.” Jeter concluded by saying, “Because I wouldn’t do it to a friend.”
