Bidding farewell to his playing days in 2014, Jeter still had the desire to contribute to the game. So, after concluding his playing days for the Yankees, he took up an administrative role. Derek became a co-owner and the CEO of the Miami Marlins. But the feeling wasn’t the same as while he was active on the playing front.

Jeter joined the Marlins’ ownership group in 2017. While he got in touch with the game again that way, the feeling wasn’t the same as playing on the field. Kay and Jeter got down to discuss that topic in the episode.

Kay asked Jeter, “When you owned the Marlins, was it tough to watch the games? Because I know you loved to play. And you’ve told me, sometimes watching it’s a little boring.”

Jeter replied, saying, “No, I watched. But it was tough to watch. You can’t impact the outcome in a game. You sit there and you see the game through your own lens. And how you would go about doing it. Or how you would go about playing. But it’s very frustrating to actually watch and have zero impact on the outcome of the game.”

Life as the Miami Marlins CEO

Unfortunately, Jeter did not enjoy a successful career as a franchise administrator. His reign as a Marlins CEO and co-owner was not as impactful as his playing tenure. So, he resigned from the role in 2022.
