New York Mets scored a victory over the Miami Marlins on April 2nd, defeating them 5-1. And a big part of that achievement was the Japanese sensation Kodai Senga. The 30-year-old made waves in the Nippon Professional Baseball League with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks with his pitching skills. After 11 amazing years in Japan, Senga signed with the Mets in December 2022. And if his debut is anything to go by, he will be unstoppable.

The beginning of the Mets vs Marlins game was a little hard on Senga. After all, anyone would give in to nerves at the thought of pitching on such a huge stage, with thousands of people’s eyes trained on them. The pitcher even commented afterward on how his legs were shaking. And although Senga struggled a bit initially, he made an incredible comeback that sent a player’s bat flying.

Any pitcher would remember their first major league strikeout. But it would be especially memorable for Kodai Senga, who made Yuli Gurriel’s bat fly. Senga’s infamous ghost forkball, dubbed so because it more or less disappears from the batter’s line of sight, did what it was meant to. As the Japanese player stood on the pitch against the Marlins player, he made his iconic move. In an effort to hit low, Gurriel went a bit too loose with his bat and it flew from his hands, straight down the third base line.

It was Senga’s first MLB strikeout and it would continue on for a long while yet. Senga served 5 1/3 innings at loanDepot Park on April 2nd, with eight strikeouts and one run allowed.

Baseball fans are now changing allegiance

Twitter saw the full force of the aftermath of that game. While Mets fans applauded their victory, many professed their admiration for Kodai Senga and his ghost forkball.

Although Senga did not name his own move, he’s apparently adopted it. His glove features a blue ghost holding a pitchfork, and fans can’t help but admire it.

Some had words of criticism for Gurriel, particularly how he didn’t grip his bat properly.
