Playing the game of player trades is tough. While teams are starved of pitchers this off-season, the Chicago White Sox are the pitcher oasis, with Dylan Cease ready to be traded. But this is going to be a give-and-take. White Sox GM Chris Getz said on Tuesday, “All it takes is one team to want to jump out and get a deal done.”  But is it really that simple

It has been established that multiple clubs are interested in the 28-year-old. However, many considerations and inhibitions are supposedly holding the teams back. Is there anything beyond the factor of money? Well, the buzz surrounding the 2019 debutant is not one to ‘cease’.

Speaking of the buzz, @BNightengale tweeted about what Chris Getz had to say about the impending trade. Getz’s words displayed an eagerness to trade the righty only if they could find a player to fit their rotation. He expressed, “If we feel like there’s a there’s a fit that improves our club, we will certainly strongly consider it. Certainly that hasn’t happened at this point”.

One of the biggest teams in need of a pitcher is certainly the New York Yankees. The Yanks, with a gap in their rotation to fill, particularly after missing out on Yoshinobu Yamamoto, are not alone in their interest in Chicago’s RHP. But is their appetite big enough to overtake other suitors?

The White Sox are demanding a great deal. If Dylan Cease were to land in the Bronx, it would be at the cost of some precious prospects for NYY. Particularly after losing names like Michael King, Drew Thorpe, Jhony Brito, and Randy Vasquez to the San Diego Padres for Juan Soto earlier this offseason, maybe Hal Steinbrenner’s hunger has subsided.

That said, executives in contact with the White Sox regarding the Cease acquisition said that the asking price was three premium prospects, as reported by The Post’s Joel Sherman. Another interested franchise in this trade would be the Baltimore Orioles. They seem to be in a position to put together an appealing deal for the trade while also improving their youth-filled rotation. Considering the possibilities that linger around Cease, it is also important to analyze what happens if no teams come forward.

What If No One Trades Dylan Cease?

The team Cease is incumbent on might strategically wait until Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery get signed in an attempt to up their bid game. Furthermore, Getz said that it is “tough to tell” given that time is of the essence. He further added, “Every organization has different types of players. Those players, how they apply to your club, those are all different factors that go into making a  decision.” With that, what happens if no team makes an offer?

At this point, it can’t be ruled out that no team settles the trade. In that case, the Windy City might enter the season of 2024 with their rotation, including Cease. They might, however, deal with him at the trade deadline. That said, the risk of injuries looms greatly. While the teams feel a sense of urgency, only time can tell where Dylan Cease lands.
