When talking about baseball and its meteoric rise in the 20th century, it will be impossible not to mention Babe Ruth. Yes! Ruth, who played for both the Yankees and Red Sox, is often credited with bringing the game to the masses. Notably, he was the biggest name in the sport during his playing days, so fans loved him dearly. But there was one horrible incident with Ruth that would have been devastating for the sport had it gone the other way.

It was July 5, 1924, when the New York Yankees were ready to take on the Senators in a doubleheader at Griffith Stadium. In the fourth inning, Joe Judge stepped up to the plate and sent the ball flying down the right-field line. As Babe Ruth chased after the fly ball, his gaze was only on the ball. He didn’t see the concrete wall that loomed ahead. And he collided with the unforgiving surface and crumpled to the ground, completely knocked out by the impact. Recently, MLB fans are reacting to a resurfaced image about the same incident.

Some baseball enthusiasts made light of the situation and couldn’t help but worry about the safety of the concrete wall, rather than the player himself. Maybe this is a testament to what raw power the world’s greatest ball player had in his time. 

A lot was going on in this photo that has resurfaced on social media. The curious crowd peering over the wall and policemen trying to keep them at bay. A basket of coca-cola bottles? The original baseball caps.

Babe Ruth Carved Into His Iconic Bat After Games – Here’s Why

Rather than focusing on the gravity of Ruth’s injury, some were in awe of the Yankees player and the lack of aid needed him; while some were fascinated by the old photograph, a piece of iconic sports history. 

Notably, it would have been probably the most tragic incident in baseball had it gone the other way. But thankfully, The Bombino did not suffer any major mishap.

What happened after the collision? 

According to Deadspin, the following day’s New York Times shed some light on the incident. They reported that Ruth had been knocked unconscious by a punch to the solar plexus and had sustained an injury to his left hip. Trainer Doc Woods, who arrived on the scene with a bucket of water and first aid supplies, woke Ruth up by splashing water on his face. They wanted to take him out of the game. Ruth, it should be noted, was unrelenting and stayed in the game. He finished the game with a perfect 3-for-3.
