The San Francisco Giants have emerged more confident than ever. Despite not exactly having been the toast of the National League in recent years, they are solid in 2024. Historically, teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves have consistently dominated the NL geography and the Giants have more often than not found themselves in the shadows. However, recent moves indicate that the Giants are ready to shake things up!

This is not a baseless point being made. A few months ago, projections placed SanFran near the bottom of the wild card hopes. However, the tables started to turn with the acquisitions of All-Star third baseman Matt Chapman and flamethrowing southpaw Blake Snell. Mind you, these are some powerful names that exist out there in the baseball realm. The message is loud and clear – the Giants are serious about contending.

To second this though, the President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi knows the reality – the Dodgers and Braves remain the clear favorites.  However, with a hint of defiance, he added, “And then, you’ve got what we view as a lot of parity.”  These words ring loud and true considering the jumbled picture emerging in the National League.

Of course, there are expectations and Zaidi himself isn’t shying away from having them. He made a bold statement, “I think we can play with anybody.” That said, of course, the real deal is when the Giants step onto the diamond. But then everyone has their ears up to learn about the aspirations of the Giants.

There’s a good reason to bet on the Giants as well. Their revamped rotation is a direct cause for optimism. Think about this: A healthy Alex Cobb and the return of Robbie Ray will bolster a starting staff that already features Snell and Logan Webb. Not to mention the top prospect Kyle Harrison. It is this potent pitching combination that could propel the Giants to great heights.

How Optimistic is Too Optimistic in San Francisco?

On the flip side of this confidence, do note that these are only projections. Variable factors such as injuries, unforeseen trades, and unprecedented player performance can all throw a wrench into even the most strategically laid out plans. A team that has carried the aura of being mediocre is sure to face skepticism as a contender. FanGraphs initially projected the Giants for 80.7 wins. But then Chapman’s signing bumped that number up to 83.4. And now they’ve got Snell.
