“You Can Get Inspired…”- Derek Jeter Recently Discussed How Serena Williams’ Success Motivated Him

Derek Jeter was always the sort of player belonging to a different breed. He had a long and prosperous career on the diamond. His records set the bar high and created examples for the younger generation. But Jeter also found motivation from beyond the world of baseball, which is something that he recently talked about. 

Derek Jeter established a reputation as one of the most successful shortstops in baseball history. He played his entire MLB career with the New York Yankees. His playing record comprises 14 All-Star appearances and five World Series championships. This, Jeter became symbolic of the Yankees jersey and an evergreen icon of baseball.

Jeter’s elegance in baseball made him a national treasure. Thus, he has remained a frequent guest on popular talk shows. Recently, Jeter graced the podcast of famous radio personality, Angie Martinez. 

Derek Jeter on his motivation from beyond the ballpark 

Derek Jeter is a role model athlete and an inspiration to countless upcoming aspirants. However, his success has also, in part, found motivation from other legendary athletes. Speaking on Angie Martinez’s podcast, Jeter emphasized how inspiration doesn’t necessarily have to be from one’s own profession. Among various topics, Jeter also mentioned the importance of passion.

Speaking about his passion, Jeter said, “I played 20 years. That’s a long time for a professional athlete. It goes by quickly. And it just bothered me when people didn’t have the same passion for it, that I did.”

At one point, Angie spoke about tennis Serena Williams being applauded by the ‘King Of Golf’ Tiger Woods. Serena won 73 career titles in all total. Among those triumphs were 23 grand slams, to Serena’s credit. In 2002, Serena also rose up to the number one spot in women’s international tennis rankings.

Jeter replied, talking about Serena’s influential role, saying, “Of course, you can get inspired by other people. It doesn’t necessarily be in your own profession. You can be inspired by someone completely in a different profession. You know, I like to watch how people operate.” 

Derek Jeter’s tips to handle failure 

Amidst the conversation with Angie, Jeter also shared his intellect on handling failure. He described how failure would hit everyone at some point. But the key from his perspective is not to accept failure as a norm. Rather, one must learn from their failures and move ahead.
