Yankees Latest Acquisition Always Dreamed of Playing in New York, Despite History with Boston Red Sox

If there are two names that can never go, they are Jeter and the Boston Red Sox. Thanks to the age-old rivalry between Derek Jeter’s New York Yankees and the BoSox. But here we are, in a world where there exists a prodigy and his namesake who has quite an important chapter in his past with the Red Sox.
On Tuesday, the Yankees established that they had claimed Jeter Downs off of the Washington Nationals’ waiver list. Now with two Jeters associated with the Yankees, it’s important to note one thing. Naturally, the Hall of Famer and former Yankee captain is the inspiration behind Downs’ name. After all, “I’ve idolized him my whole life.”

Growing up a Yankees fan, the 25-year-old always wanted to play in the Bronx. On Tuesday, his desire came to fruition. The infielder has appeared totally in 20 big-league games with the Red Sox in 2022 and the Nationals in 2023. Despite his minimal MLB experience, he has shown promise.
Earlier today, the Yankees claimed INF Jeter Downs off waivers from the Washington Nationals.

The shortstop, third baseman, and second baseman, played in six Washington games in 2023. He went 2-for-5 (.400) with two stolen bases, four walks, an RBI, and four runs scored. In 20 career games, Downs batted .182 (8-for-44) with five RBIs and a home run. The Nationals designated him for assignment earlier this week.

His period in the minor leagues was quite impressive, too. He recorded batting stats of .222 (40-for-180) and three home runs. Additional to 20 RBIs, he stole 11 bases in 60 overall games this year. He played with Triple-A Rochester, High-A Wilmington, and the FCL Nationals. These do account for why the Yanks chose him, albeit his name. A dream come true for someone who has grown up adoring the former captain.

Downs’ Life Coming to a Full Circle with the New York Yankees
The Colombian already has a history with the Yankees that goes beyond just his name. In the tenth inning of a Red Sox game on July 9, he recorded his first big league hit and RBI against the Yanks. He also hit his first career home run in the Bronx. There’s also a personal aspect of his to the Big Apple.

Even though his father is a Red Sox fan, Downs mentioned that his mother named him after Derek Jeter. He was born three years after Jeter’s major league debut. As a lifelong Yankees supporter, Downs shared a snippet of his first meeting of sorts with the veteran captain in February 2020.
“I was driving; me and my brother were driving to go to train. We’re in traffic. My brother sees this Range Rover pulling up. He was like, ‘Oh my God, is that Jeter?’ He honks and I wave at him.” With that came a memory that will remain etched in his mind forever.
