The awards season is here. And ever so rarely are there instances when a rookie takes center stage. At this point, the veterans take a step back and laud the newly risen star. Yes, it is the New York Yankees’ 2023 debutant who has done it. Though his overall season was shaky, his defense was worth some gold!

What’s more impressive is how Anthony Volpe surpassed tenured nominees and was able to shine on Sunday. As Volpe walks out with a highly envied glove, he stands next to the Yankees legend, Derek Jeter

MLB announced the winners of the Gold Glove Awards for the year 2023. It was the 22-year-old Anthony Volpe who bagged the award. With this win, he wrote his name at the top of many lists.

This New York-born went on to become the youngest shortstop, beating Alan Trammell in 1980 to win the award. Further, he stands next to Derek Jeter, who won in 2010, as the only other shortstop from the Bronx to have won this award. With his jaw-dropping defense in his rookie season itself, he stopped some amazing defenders from getting this award.

Although Volpe was the first rookie to join the Yankees’ 20/20 club, his offensive career was not without its ups and downs. But his defensive play was a different narrative. So much so that the Yankees manager, Aaron Boone, shared his thoughts. His words were, I think he’s got a real chance to win the Gold Glove, to do that at shortstop, at a premium position like that, is huge.” Clearly, his reliable defense paid off.

According to FanGraphs, Volpe tied for sixth place among AL shortstops with 15 defensive runs saved and tied for second place with one out above average. He made 17 mistakes, but his baseball instincts more than made up for his lack of arm strength.
