Jorge Masvidal Teases Date For UFC Return Over Summer 2021

Jorge Masvidal is one of the biggest stars in MMA. His performances in 2019 helped him elevate his status to that of a superstar. Despite being a journeyman for most of his career, Masvidal elevated himself to superstardom with the fastest knockout in UFC history over Ben Askren and a massive main event win against Nate Diaz.
However, the bigger Masvidal has gotten, the lesser we have seen him inside a cage. He has fought only twice in the last 20 months, beating Diaz but losing a title fight against Kamaru Usman on six-day notice last June. Masvidal has been out since, but may soon be returning to the cage.

Summer is usually when the UFC stacks their best cards, so it could be plausible to see a Masvidal return then. Jorge has made his intentions of fighting only on the biggest stage possible clear. However, the questions over his opponents and direction in the division still loom large. So, how will the UFC deal with that?

Jorge Masvidal may have the name value of a champion, but he shouldn’t immediately rematch Kamaru Usman. While Usman evidently wants the fight, Masvidal could do better with other opponents. Even if it was six-day notice, his loss to Usman seemed pretty decisive and there needs to be more of a buffer before an immediate rematch.
‘Gamebred’ is yet to make up the loss that he suffered at the hands of Stephen Thompson in 2018. Similarly, Leon Edwards is also waiting to settle their beef from 2019. After all of this, we have the elusive super-fight between Masvidal and Colby Covington. Hence, the BMF is not short on options.

However, will he be able to hold off on the temptation of a title fight? Will the UFC even bring him back for anything outside a major money-moving card? It seems unlikely, especially with how scarce Jorge has become inside the octagon. Hopefully, this return materializes, and the UFC finds him a good opponent for this bout.
