A race that had been at the center of infinite discussions and deliberations delivered perhaps one of the most iconic races of the season. Sunday’s Bristol Race! Thanks to the exceptional tire wear-off, which compelled the teams to return to the drawing board to redraft their strategy and find the right balance. 

A race track that witnessed a record amount of lead changes will soon again play the role of host but in a different setting and mindset. However, after Sunday’s race which saw the return of the concrete after three years of experimentation, will the fall race during the Playoffs be as intriguing as the spring race and promote a complete sell-out? Well, veteran NASCAR Spotters seem to deliver an affirmative answer but with a condition.

If one might be wondering what the apparent differences between a veteran and an amateur driver are, the answers were delivered without a doubt. The unprecedented tire battle in the Next Gen cars had left the drivers and their teams scratching their heads and scrambling for the perfect strategy. Here is where experience came into effect and veterans like Denny Hamlin could capitalize upon that, finally clinching that awaited victory.

The track, which saw a race become a race of conservation of the tires, will once again host its annual night race later in the season during the playoffs. However, after Sunday’s race the question that has been the talk of the town is, will a similar performance be on display in the fall? Well, the only answer that Brett Griffin and TJ Majors could think of was a complete sell-out of the grandstands. Speaking amongst each other on the aftermath of the race on their podcast ‘Door Bumper Clear’, Majors stated, “If they are saying if they are going to bring this tire in the fall, there is probably going to be- the ticket sales are going up.”

Continuing on the same lines, Brett Griffin added, “When they reconfigured this track they took away the bottom groove, the bump and run. They took away all the things that Bristol was famous for and this a chance to get a lot of that synergy back. Whether we like it or not there is a ton of momentum around that race yesterday and they could sell it out.”

An ecstatic Griffin also added how the iconic track could be an ideal place to host even the Super Bowl, but it is the lack of proper lodgings and accommodations that act as the only spoilsport in the implementation of this plan. Nevertheless, applauding the Bristol Motor Speedway, Griffin also added, “It’s a bada*s track but they got a ton of momentum and Marcus is a smart dude and I don’t have his phone number, but if I did I’d say hope you can capitalise on this and sell the freaking thing out.”

Although there were no changes in the tire compound during Sunday’s race and has been in use since the 2022 fall race, the tires faced the worst fate during the 500-lap race. The only difference was the resin that was sprayed on the corners of the inside of the track and caused excessive tire wear.

With the exceptional amount of wear-off, NASCAR was forced to approve an extra set of tires by Goodyear during the second stage of the race. Speaking on the surprising decision, John Probst, NASCAR’s Chief Racing Development office, expressed, “I know on the [tire] allotment, we actually removed a set of tires from the fall race coming into this race. That’s on us, not Goodyear. So we actually gave that back during the race, as you guys saw. We’ll go back and look at it all.”

“There were times in the race, obviously, when there was anxiety around [having] enough tires to finish it. But man, coming out the end and watching all that, I would not want to change much at all, honestly. Just maybe give them more tires [in the fall].”

The Sunday’s race at Bristol was perhaps a surprise for the NASCAR fans. Moreover, if the fall race promises to deliver a similar spectacle, it would perhaps fetch the highest viewership and a complete selling out of the grandstands.
