Truck Series driver Hailie Deegan is known for exploring different types of racing, and as it turns out, it doesn’t necessarily have to be on land. The 22-year-old recently had perhaps one of her wildest racing experiences, which saw her fire a huge machine gun. Deegan might not have had any boat racing experience, but she is not going to forget about this little adventure anytime soon.
Hailie Deegan has always been a massive supporter of the US Navy. She let her love for the Navy show in the 2023 season’s Truck Series race in Bristol. The ThorSport Racing driver chose to adorn her #13 truck with the colors of the navy. Now, she just got a taste of what it’s like to do perhaps one of the most challenging yet coolest jobs in the world.

Hailie Deegan is not fast enough for the Navy
Deegan arrived at the Naval Amphibious Base in Coronado, where she was greeted by SB1 Jake Foynes, who described what being a SWCC (Special Warfare Combat Crewman) entailed. SB1 Foynes emphasized that their job was all about special reconnaissance and intelligence, direct action, and insertion and extraction.
As Hailie Deegan admitted to being a bit confused by it all, the two found common ground, and of course, it was all about speed.
“It’s pretty complicated but in a nutshell, we drive fast boats and we shoot big guns,” SB1 Foynes said.
“Okay so I drive fast cars, you drive fast boats, we should get along just fine,” Hailie Deegan answered.
The two would then team up with a few other naval officers to take on another team of naval officers led by SB1 Foynes’ boss, SWCC Operator Chief West. The losers had to go and take a dip in the chilly waters of the South Bay. Unfortunately for Deegan, her team couldn’t get the job done.
But the action was just getting started. Both boats received a distress signal as part of a training exercise to extract a couple of officers. The two RHIBs (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat), which had two gun stations on each side, sped to the location. This is where Hailie Deegan got a taste of firing one of the machine guns.
At the end of it all, the 22-year-old Truck Series driver hailed the SWCC operatives for their immaculate teamwork. “It was cool to see how you guys’ whole team worked within you guys while everything was going on and happening, and being able to be right in the middle of it was a really cool experience.”
However, as part of the losing team, Hailie Deegan and SB1 Jake Foynes still had the price to pay. The two took a dip in the ice-cold waters of the South Bay and were seen sitting on the pier afterward in their drenched camo suits. However, that’s not the only thing she did at the base.

NASCAR driver left after intense training regime
Hailie Deegan got the whole Navy experience at the Naval Amphibious Base in Colorado, including the grueling training regime. Earlier this year, when she ran the US Navy paint scheme at the Bristol Motor Speedway, the 22-year-old expressed excitement. However, she was left completely exhausted at the end of the Navy’s physical training regime.
“That was insane,” Deegan said. “To know that that was a tamed-down version. I thought that I was in shape but I’m not in that type of shape. That is a specific craft you have to learn to be able to do that stuff.”
