“He Needs Some Glasses”: Kevin Harvick Throws a 8-Word Jibe at William Byron’s Failed Martinsville Stunt

After cruising to his 13th career victory, William Byron cemented his status as the dominant driver so far this season. The gigantic Hendrick team was ecstatic as Byron led a podium takeover in Martinsville. Leading the NASCAR Power Rankings as he enters Texas, the video-game-trained driver’s on-track antics attracted attention. After the grueling 400 laps, Byron may have faced visual strain.
Leading 73 laps, Byron’s strategic pit call pushed him to the lead by the end of the race. In the end, he put up some strange activity. And Kevin Harvick had a hilarious take on it.

Before Harvick hung up his racing helmet, he stamped a name for himself as a dynamic driver. He got into conflicts often and had some cool shades to accompany his fights. In fact, NASCAR ranked him as one of the coolest drivers rocking their glasses. Now, after William Byron’s Martinsville actions, Harvick reminisced about the first time he got glasses.
Talking about the Cook Out 400 race on Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour, he observed Byron’s attempted yet failed stunt in the finishing laps. “Man, I see that Byron hit the wall right there. He made a funny call after the race, not knowing why he hit the wall so many times. Then he did a donut right over in front of the 1500 Hendrick employees that were at the backstretch off at turn 2. He knocked that thing right into the fence, nose-first over there as well.”
In line with this assumption, Harvick suggested, “So maybe William needs to go to my eye doctor. Maybe he needs some glasses!”
Then Harvick recollected his own optical story, “I kept right-siding the fence hard, and man I don’t really know what’s going on here. So went to an eye doctor, got it checked out. My first ones were at the dirt race…I had these sports glasses, right against my face with curved lenses. I felt like I’m racing in a fishbowl.”
Despite Harvick’s funny jibe, William Byron got the job done in Martinsville. The crowd drowned him in an uproar, as he currently leads with the most victories this season.
Harvick believes in Byron’s potential, as he sets him on par with his veteran Hendrick teammate.

Ever since the Next Gen car came into being, only a handful of drivers have adapted well to the drastic changes. William Byron and Kyle Larson are among the top performers in that regard, battling for the lead in the Hendrick team. Although Larson is a seasoned driver with 24 Cup wins, William Byron has a few advantages over his teammate, as Kevin Harvick emphasized before Byron won at COTA.
“Kyle Larson, naturally gifted, will win in anything fast. William Byron, works hard, fast, again can win in anything in stock car racing for sure at the highest level. But there’s also that piece of the puzzle in races that are 400, 500, 600 miles long, that requires you to finish. And I think that’s still some of Kyle Larson’s weakness.” He added, “William has been the opposite. He’s capitalized on some of those situations…”
