NASCAR has always been open to exploring possibilities for the near future. Constantly evolving and inventing in the sport has been reinforced by the NASCAR community’s wish to not saturate as a sport with time. One visionary who has led this movement is former NASCAR crew chief Ray Evernham. In a long-spanning career, Evernham has been a driver, a crew chief, a consultant, and a team owner.
Having taken on these many roles, his contribution stands out in NASCAR history. However, in recent news, he has taken an initiative that could bring forth a wind of change in the American racing culture. Having acquired the rights to the IROC, Ray Evernham has taken a step forward to bringing some of the biggest names in motorsports together. The build-up to this acquisition has not been instantaneous, but a gradual process.

Has Ray Evernham been working for the IROC takeover for a long time?
Evernham started his career at IROC as a chassis specialist. Having experienced the grandeur of the competition, he has had a soft corner in his heart for it. While the competition has yet to be held since 2006 despite its star power, Ray Evernham gradually transitioned to NASCAR.
Having won three Cup Series championships with Jeff Gordon, he established himself as a legend of the American motorsports culture. Following his journey with Gordon, he moved on to the ownership of Evernham Motorsports and soon into competition ownership. Following his stint in NASCAR, he created the SRX Series with Tony Stewart and, surprisingly, is no longer a part of the tourney’s board, apart from being an investor.
Evernham’s constantly fluctuating interest has now brought him back to IROC. Over the past year, Ray Evernham has appeared in various videos flaunting his incredible IROC collection. In one of these videos, he stated, “To me, these cars are what the next big thing’s going to be.“

Ray Evernham may have been planning a takeover and giving out hints over the past year. Maybe that was his plan all along. With the return of IROC, stars from various motorsports would look forward to it, and schedules could undergo massive shifts.

IROC’s return: More silverware for NASCAR drivers
When the IROC announced an acute financial crisis in 2007, it surprised the racing community. The fans and drivers loved the competition. However, that didn’t stop the shutdown from happening. In 2008, IROC auctioned off the cars, which seemed like a heartbreaking permanent closure.

The faction this hurt the most were NASCAR drivers. In the competition’s history, NASCAR drivers have dominated IROC like no other racing discipline. Competing in similarly adjusted stock cars offered an equal fighting ground for every driver. The drivers loved this idea, and it was no surprise that the fans loved the competition. Legendary drivers like Dale Earnhardt, Cale Yarborough, and Geoff Bodine have won the tourney, with Mark Martin being the winningest driver with five wins.
If history is anything to go by, NASCAR drivers could once again get a chance to reclaim the sport’s lost glory with IROC’s return. With former Michael Waltrip Racing owner Rob Kauffman collaborating with Ray Evernham to form IROC Holdings LLC for the acquisition.
