Ty Majeski had the chance to make history. The 30-year-old racer was on the verge of becoming only the second driver in history to win the Snowball Derby for the third time at Five Flags Speedway. However, he narrowly fell short at the 300-lap event after being piped by Kaden Honeycutt at the year’s biggest Super Late Model event. The Wisconsin native has already had a stellar year, winning the Truck Series championship ThorSport Racing. However, he wasn’t as lucky at the half-mile oval in Pensacola, Florida.

In the post-race interview, Majeski gave credit where it’s due to winner Kaden Honeycutt. The 21-year-old is set to take on a full-time role at Niece Motorsports in 2025, and his frenemy couldn’t help but make a tongue-in-cheek comment about the other Truck Series, questioning their racing ability.

Ty Majeski looks forward to more battles with Honeycutt

It was all working out perfectly for Ty Majeski. The defending Snowball Derby winner has been there and done that at Five Flags Speedway and showed lightning-fast pace at the half-mile paved oval. He recorded a time of 16.120 seconds, which was the quickest lap of anyone in the 44-car grid. It seemed like the Truck Series driver had put his practice session woes behind him, after a piece of the track hit his vehicle on Thursday, damaging his No. 91 iRacing Toyota’s front end. However, there seemed to be no indication of any problems, as the 30-year-old recorded his first Snowball Derby pole in nearly a decade.

Despite his bright start to the weekend, the race didn’t work out quite as well for Ty Majeski. The driver fell short of victory at the Pensacola track but humbly accepted the outcome in the post-race interview.

He said, “It’s special. It’s the pinnacle, right here, this race. Short track racing. Anytime you can conquer that feat, it’s very special. Kaden is a good kid, look forward to racing him next year in the Truck Series. He’s a racer and it’s good to have more racers in the Truck Series. Happy to be here, happy to have the opportunity to sit on the podium. Just not good enough today.”

Kaden Honeycutt had a promising start to the 57th Snowball Derby as well. The youngster qualified on the outside pole alongside Majeski and was determined to give the reigning Truck Series champion a fight at Five Flags Speedway. Both drivers exchanged bump-and-runs to take the lead, and the 21-year-old eventually prevailed with just 19 laps remaining, showing that he didn’t just have the hunger to succeed but the talent to back up his ambition as well.

As for Ty Majeski, it only went from bad to worse. After giving up his lead in the race’s closing stages, the ThorSport Racing driver was overtaken by Stephen Nasse, who charged towards Honeycutt in the final 10 laps. However, Nasse eventually ran out of time, while Majeski’s No. 91 Toyota fell short at the half-mile track, showing an absence of the speed that won him the pole position ahead of the Snowball Derby. However, the racer will now set his sights on winning next year’s competition and securing his third Tom Dawson Trophy of his career.

Majeski highlights reasons for Snowball Derby heartbreak

Ty Majeski has had quite a year, hasn’t he? The racing driver secured three wins in the Truck Series, including the season finale at Phoenix Raceway to clinch the championship for the first time in his career. He also entered the Snowball Derby as one of the overwhelming favorites, having won the 300-lap event twice before. Going by his talent and experience, there was little that would stop him from winning at Five Flags Speedway, especially after he finished on pole ahead of the Super Late Model stock car race.

However, it didn’t go as planned. Analyzing the factors that didn’t work in his favor, Majeski said in the post-race interview, “In the race, we didn’t see that raw speed and I kind of felt it all weekend. The Snowball is an interesting race because it is longer, longer, longer and it always comes down to a 20-lap shootdown so you have to have a good enough long-run car to keep yourself in the game and then a good short-run car with the right adjustments to make the car go in the short run.”

It seems like his No. 91 iRacing Toyota let him down at the half-mile oval this time around. Despite the heartbreaking result, Ty Majeski enjoyed competing in the event and said, “I love having the opportunity to come down to race the Snowball Derby. It’s such a challenge. I always say, ‘You can’t be fast enough to win this thing’”.
