Who can forget the infamous racetrack rivalry between Kurt Busch and Jimmy Spencer? While the two had been going at it for years, it was Kurt Busch’s apparent “kiss my rear end” gesture at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in August of 2002 that drew the attention and sharp criticism of audiences. Spanning across several races, the aftermath of the feud also saw one of them with a bloody nose!

However, haven’t we all wondered what exactly went down between the two? And now the man of the hour, Kurt Busch himself, has come forward with the tale.

The rivalry between Kurt Busch and Jimmy Spencer has been a point of contention among fans. America has wondered who to blame for the conflict. But, according to NASCAR veteran Kurt Busch, it was definitely Jimmy Spencer who started it all!

Speaking on NASCAR driver Corey LaJoie’s podcast Stacking Pennies, Busch reiterated how he’s sure Jimmy Spencer wrecked him intentionally at the Indianapolis Speedway. He also denied starting the feud or going after Jimmy first, at the Bristol Motor Speedway in March 2002.

“The whole Indianapolis thing with Jimmy Spencer. Like, when he wrecked me, he knows he wrecked me,” Kurt said. “I never wrecked him. I only moved him,” he explained further.

Referring to the infamous rear-ending incident, Kurt stated how the nation misunderstood him.

He said, “When I got out of the car at Indy after I wrecked and I’m patting my rear-end. In short-track racing, that means you go to the back. You wreck that guy, you go to the back. 99.9% of America thought that was ‘kiss my rear end’. And I know that’s not the way it went, and nobody wanted to take in the proper truth of the story.”

But it doesn’t end there! Jimmy Spencer’s infamous punch that gave Kurt a bloody nose was also big news, and Kurt says he knows who to hold accountable.

Things took a heated turn when, in August 2003, Jimmy suddenly ended up punching Busch! However, according to Kurt, NASCAR might have been at fault! Kurt’s radio chatter with his crew, where he apparently discussed wrecking Jimmy’s car, was made public. And that is what pushed Jimmy to his limits!

“Like ’03 at Michigan, umm, we were rubbing fenders and all that, and then of course, NASCAR takes my radio chatter and plays it for their team to hear and [Jimmy] wants to jump in my window and punch me before I can get out, which did happen. He was suspended, crowd’s all on his side. It was pretty big for a while,” Busch explained.

However, it looks like there’s no more bad blood between the two anymore! The two have moved on and Kurt said, in retrospect, the incident with Jimmy only made him stronger.

“We ended up at a dinner in Michigan one time, random media type dinner and we were all just like ‘cool man’,” he said.

Explaining further, Kurt said, “It was like ‘cool, we’re all good now’. Water under the bridge. I was happy with the way it worked out because it helped me become a stronger racer in the beginning. He taught me how to be tougher!”
