Ever since Kyle Busch sat behind the No. 5 car of Hendrick Motorsports back in 2005, he has been a name that cannot be ignored. Through his two-decade-long career, the 38-year-old has won 2 Cup Series championships and conquered numerous tracks that even the greatest have failed to win. After multiple battles on and off the track, Busch today races for the old Richard Childress and is still in contention for the 2023 championship. However, recent events have begun throwing light on the possibility of the driver’s retirement.

The sale of Kyle Busch Motorsports to Spire Motorsports that went down last week has driven one too many conversations regarding the star’s future. Discussing on the same lines, the hosts at the Rubbin’ is Racing podcast identified another event that hints at the driver’s preparation for his life after NASCAR.

Will the sale of a top NASCAR team have negative effects on NASCAR?

2010 was a very important and fulfilling year for Kyle Busch. Apart from getting married to his wife, Samantha, he also founded Kyle Busch Motor Sports that year. After 13 years of successful presence in the Truck Series, the driver revealed that he would be parting ways with the outfit and selling it to Spire Motorsports.

While his call could have just been a reflection of not being able to spend enough time with his growing family and in his seat at RCR, the NASCAR community has, as always, looked between the lines. Discussing the move of Busch on the Rubbin is Racing, the host, Large, raised the question of whether the sale at the top could mean negativity for NASCAR.

Answering him, podcast participant, Quicks, voiced how it could merely be a business decision. He said, “Yeah, I just don’t think with like sports, I don’t know if there ever is a top. I remember people said that Mark Cuban overpaid for the Mavericks and it’s worth 20x what he bought it for. A lot of times sports stuff… just if you can hold it, it goes up in value. (…) There’s just so much more money and less stress if you just can offload it for millions of dollars than trying to turn a profit every year. So I don’t blame Kyle at all.”

Large was, however, quick to turn skeptical and venture into the possibility of the No. 8 driver retiring. To back his thoughts, he used last month’s “for sale” listing of Busch’s North Carolina mansion.

Kyle Busch’s young son, Brexton, has been making rounds in motorsports and gained the attention of many. Kyle has long made it known that his ideal retirement plan would be to oversee the boy’s career. Back in July, he’d reiterated the idea and said, “I would say in a perfect world – I’ve kind of dreamt this up a little bit – in a perfect world, I would retire from Cup racing when Brexton is 15 years-old and I would go run a year of Trucks.” 

Even then, he’d planned that he would be spending the next 6 or 7 years in the top tier. But the sale of his racing team was a jump on everyone who followed him and has put his plans into question. Talking about the listing of Busch’s mansion, Large talked about how the driver had reasoned the sale by wanting a “property located better to proximity to the major majority of our activities.” 

While the podcast host understood where the drier was coming from, he couldn’t help but cast his doubts regarding the scheme of things. He said, “I think maybe if it’s along those lines it makes sense. But otherwise Kyle Bush is liquidating right? Let’s just keep that in the back of our heads, so if something pops up where this makes sense, you know maybe there’s something more to it.”

Despite Busch’s wife, Samantha, expressing to a fan on her Instagram handle that the driver wasn’t planning on retiring anytime soon, the community’s doubts on the matter don’t seem to be exhausted. Until we hear otherwise from the official camps, the focus will have to be on Busch’s performances amounting towards his 3rd Cup Series championship. Finishing at P25 in Talladega, he will be racing at the Roval for the win and the ticket to the round of 8!
