Have you ever wondered if all full-time Cup drivers have a common chat group? It’s no secret that not everyone on the grid is a friend. On-track incidents often lead to drivers falling out, but there are still important matters that need to be spoken about with everyone. Recently, William Byron revealed that there is, in fact, a driver chat with all 36 full-time drivers. However, according to Christopher Bell, things are not exactly formal between everyone.

On a recent episode of the NASCAR Insiders Roundtable, Steve Letarte hosted a number of people from the industry, including Bell and Byron. Apart from the two drivers, there were people like NASCAR senior vice president and chief racing development officer John Probst, Team Penske representative Travis Geisler, and NASCAR senior vice president of competition Elton Sawyer.

HMS and JGR stars reveal details about drivers’ group chat

Steve Letarte posed the question to William Byron first. He asked how the full-time drivers discuss anything new that NASCAR decides to bring into the fray. The Hendrick Motorsports star said that there was a group chat for that, but he himself was not a very active participant.

“Yeah, so all 36 full-time guys have a driver chat, and we go on there and talk about various things, and I’m not as opinionated as some. I don’t feel like it… I feel like some guys have more, like concrete things that they want, but for me, it’s kind of going with the flow, and I am still trying to learn what I like. It’s my sixth year, so I feel like I have a better idea of kind of what direction I want to go, but yeah,” the 25-year-old said.

When the focus shifted to Christopher Bell, he revealed something a bit questionable. As per the Joe Gibbs Racing star, a lot of the conversation was porta-potty talk. He did, however, credit NASCAR for scheduling the driver meetings to give them updates about the sport. “The NASCAR guys have done an amazing job here recently of scheduling all the meetings they invite all the drivers to and kind of give us updates on where we’re at on a lot of technical stuff, like how you officiate the races and what the aero package updates are, so we have that venue and then we have the group chat,” he said. 

“Lot of porta potty talk on pit road, so between the group chat and the meetings, that’s our communication,” Christopher Bell added.

This time last year, Christopher Bell went into the playoff race at the Charlotte Roval with a lot of pressure on his shoulders. The Joe Gibbs Racing man was in a must-win situation. Fortunately, in-race situations helped out the 28-year-old, who won the race and made it to the next round. Despite the triumphant moment, the driver of the No. 20 is thankful that he has a points buffer this time around.

In a recent interview with Speedway Digest, Christopher Bell said, “I definitely appreciate the circumstances we are under this time compared to last going into the Roval. Last year was a very stressful day; we performed well and kind of hung around the back half of the top 10, and then the yellow came out and gave us an opportunity at it.”

“We were fortunate for it to work out last year, but I’m very thankful we are sitting here with a points buffer. We can go into the race with a different mentality this year,” the no. 20 drivers added.

The mentality may be different, but Christopher Bell will surely be hoping for the same result as last year. He’s had a decent record at the roval so far. The JGR star has started three races at the track and finished in the top 10 twice. Will he be able to build on his record? Only time will tell.
