Things have gotten a bit emotional in the NASCAR community following Sunday’s Cup Series finale at Daytona. As former Cup champion Kurt Busch announced his retirement, followers of the sport gathered to pay their respects to an entertaining and Hall of Fame-worthy career. However, the announcement was only a matter of time if the buildup is anything to go by.

Kurt’s retirement comes in the wake of his crash at the Pocono Raceway last year. Since then, his role in the #45 car has been taken by Tyler Reddick, who has also impressed over time. But the void his departure leaves in the industry is unfillable.

Close friend and former driver Jeff Burton is one of the people saddened by Kurt’s career’s unfortunate turn and lets his thoughts be known as an appreciation for Kurt’s service to the sport.

Jeff Burton waves an emotional goodbye to Kurt Busch

The 2004 Cup champion was forced to sit out the rest of the season in 2022 due to the recurring concussions his body had to endure. The crash at Pocono left an irreversible scar on his physical state, forcing him to make the big decision. 23XI Racing complied with his wishes and availed itself of the services of Reddick, signing him from Richard Childress Racing.

Showing their faith in Kurt Busch, co-owner Denny Hamlin decided to stand behind him as he went through the recovery phase to make a healthy return.

And now, as the situation has unfolded, we might never see him race in the Cup Series again. Burton sends his flowers for the career of a champion and a legend on Twitter, as he tweets,

“Congratulations @KurtBusch on a great career! Not only an incredible driver, but also a friend. Thank you for all you’ve done in and out of the car for NASCAR. I cannot wait to see what you do next!”

However, earlier this year, Busch did give the fans a hint towards a return to racing. Although it didn’t materialize, it would have been another great addition to the sport and even more to the arsenal of 23XI Racing.

Following the season opener at Daytona earlier this year, Kurt Busch opened up about his struggles in an interview with Forbes. He explained the toll it took on him, both mentally and physically and the huge gap that racing filled in his life.

“I notice things that bring me up and then break me down when I have to do a day on and a day off now.” claimed Busch. “Where I was pushing seven days a week to try to get back to the car and then in all honesty, I took December off. It was an emotional time and that was part of this process as well. But I’m doing well.”

Rightfully named among NASCAR’s 75 greatest drivers, Kurt Busch is one name that has never failed to entertain. Alongside his brother Kyle, he has given the fans a lot to cheer and jeer for.

“For me, I’ve always been that, believe it or not, that shy guy, that humble guy. I just like to go out and race cars. We’ll see where it pans out. Whether it was my decision or somebody from above, it doesn’t matter to me. I’m very happy. I’m complacent.”

Maybe the fandom didn’t quite understand his value or place in the sport, criticizing him throughout his career in the top flight. But as he leaves the sport with an evergreen smile on his face, the whole community has gathered to celebrate the praiseworthy tenure of a stalwart.
