NASCAR Insider Clarifies Whether Kyle Busch’s Controversial Successor Could Win Rookie of the Year Next Season

Being exceptional in a field is rewarding in itself. However, the experience becomes all the more memorable when a person is garnered with an award acknowledging the same. And receiving such acknowledgment during the very first year of a driver’s NASCAR career is simply amazing.

NASCAR presents the Rookie of the Year award to the driver who has had the best first year in the season. This year, Austin Cindric took home the 2022 Rookie of the Year award while Harrison Burton and Todd Gilliland were the runner-ups.

However, NASCAR fans are now interested to know when Ty Gibbs will be eligible for the award. Recently, a Twitter user asked NASCAR insider and Fox Sports reporter Bob Pockrass about Gibbs’ qualifications for the Rookie of the Year award. And as a reply, Pockrass posted an explanation tweet.

In his tweet, he stated that Ty Gibbs, as well as Noah Gragson, might be eligible for the Rookie of the Year award in the 2023 Cup Series. However, he did mention that his guesses are not always right. Here is the basis of Pockrass’ conjectures.

 

Ty Gibbs has recently turned 20 years old. Moreover, in his career until now, Gibbs has already registered nine Xfinity wins and 13 Cup Series race starts.

Will Ty Gibbs race NASCAR Cup Series full-time?

Although Ty Gibbs is still quite young to race in the full-time Cup Series, his experience in the format has been quite tumultuous. In 2022, Gibbs substituted for Kurt Busch, who could not continue his races due to concussion-like symptoms. Driving the #23 car for 23XI Racing, Gibbs participated in the 2022 Cup Series races alongside experienced drivers.

Moreover, there are reports of Gibbs joining his grandfather’s racing team, Joe Gibbs Racing in the upcoming season. Although no official announcement about the same has been made yet. Before the Las Vegas Motor Speedway race, Ty Gibbs shared his experience of driving alongside professional Cup Series drivers.

He said; “It’s definitely been a lot of aging quickly. A lot of experiences. … It’s been fun. If it wasn’t fun, I wouldn’t be here. There is going to be a lot of people who are not for me, and that is part of the path I took. I knew that was going to happen before I was going to do this gig. I just mind my business and do the best I can.”
