While the Federated Auto Parts 400 Cup Series race weekend approaches, the Pocono fever is yet to die down. Flocking to the grandstands to witness their heroes battle it out at the 2023 HighPoint.com 400, fans weren’t expecting the chaotic spectacle that unfolded in front of them. Packed to the brim with spin-outs, crashes, brewing rivalries, and on-track altercations, the Trick Triangle had fans amped up.

While the in-race happening were enthralling, one crucial NASCAR element was nowhere to be found.

Although stage one of the Pocono 400 Cup Series race was uneventful, things then heated up quickly. While Joey Logano and Daniel Suarez spun out during stage two, Austin Dillon quickly stole the limelight for his helmet throw at Tyler Reddick’s car after being wrecked by the #45 Toyota. Another caution flew as Austin Dillon’s younger brother, Ty Dillon, bumped Chase Briscoe, causing him to spin out. Denny Hamlin then proceeded to jeopardize Kyle Larson, running him into the wall. Larson then retorted with a smack on Hamlin’s #11 Toyota. Spun out by Corey LaJoie during the final laps, Ryan Preece then confronted the #7 Spire Motorsports driver on Pit Road, blurting expletives and apparently landing a few blows.

Over the years, NASCAR has built up a reputation to hand out penalties for even the pettiest of matters. Given the long list of incidents at Pocono, one would expect NASCAR to hand out penalties left and right. But no, not even a single penalty was handed out, letting drivers go scot-free.

On Twitter, Bob Pockrass wrote, No penalties from Pocono weekend. All clear at R&D center.” and No behavioral penalties from Pocono. Not for Larson for actions under yellow  Not Austin Dillon for helmet throw. Not Ty Dillon for wreck with Briscoe (nascar viewed that as a racing incident). Not Preece for whatever happened with LaJoie.”

Needless to say, fans were taken aback by NASCAR’s sudden change of heart.

Fans shocked by uncharacteristic Pocono escape

Responding to Bob Pockrass’ tweet, fans on Twitter had a lot to say. Pointing out how Austin Dillon’s helmet throw was not red-flagged by NASCAR, one fan wrote, “So helmet throwing is now acceptable? Interesting.”

Comparing NASCAR with wrestling, another fan commented, “Typical nascar. Exactly why it’s the wwe of motorsports. Half the field would have been time penalties this weekend in a legit motorsports category”. Here are some more comments from the fans.

“Whatever happened with LaJoie” lmao even Bob doesn’t know what’s going on.”

“That is no surprise, NASCAR has always been the “if you can’t beat them, wreck em” league.  Jimmy Johnson learned last year if you race a real race car with professional drivers a NASCAR driver can’t keep up.”
