No matter how good a driver may be, there’s always that one race track one never really figures out as well as the rest. Even world champions struggle to get things right at certain race tracks. It’s almost like they’re cursed at that particular venue. While Hendrick Motorsports star Alex Bowman is no different, he chose not to reveal the track he harbors the most grievances for. 

Having an unlucky track is not something unheard of in NASCAR. For 7-time Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson, it was the Talladega Superspeedway as per motorsport.com. For Dale Earnhardt Jr, it was the New Hampshire Motor Speedway as per NBC. Incidentally, it was the same track where Alex Bowman filled in for the former Cup Series champion in 2016 and impressed HMS enough to land a full-time seat.

But which track is the one that Alex Bowman hates the most? Well, in a recent episode of the DJD Reloaded podcast, the driver of the #48 chose to remain tight-lipped about the track he despises, leaving it to the “social media sleuths” to figure it out. One of the co-hosts believed it to be the Atlanta Motor Speedway, where NASCAR goes racing next, but that was not the case.

It is easy to see why one would think the mile-and-a-half track is the HMS star’s weakest. He has started 11 Cup Series races at the venue and has finished in the top 5 only twice, despite being in one of the strongest cars in the competition. His latest result at the venue was a disastrous P26 finish that came last year.

“No Atlanta’s not what I picked. I think if you go back and see my history at a certain race track, it’s fairly obvious where I picked but I’ll leave it for the social media sleuths to find that out cuz it’s really easy. There is one place that is worse than them all by a lot and yeah that’s the one that I talk sh*t about,” the #48 driver said when he was posed the question.

Now, speaking of tracks that give Bowman a hard time, the Hendrick Motorsports star almost started the new season with a win in the Daytona 500 on Monday. However, due to a last-lap caution, his teammate William Byron was declared the winner as he was ahead when the white flag fell. Understandably, the driver of the #48 was heartbroken.

Bowman believes that race control room waited far too long to throw the caution. Perhaps they wanted to see who crossed the start/finish line when the white flag fell. The race was already delayed by a day and with the Xfinity Series opener only a few moments after the event, time was not on their side. However, for the #48 team, it was quite disappointing as they overtook the #24 car after the white flag.

“I knew I was in front of him [William Byron] when the yellow light on the track came on, but I don’t think that’s what they go by, right? They go by the yellow light in the tower or whatever. To be honest, I felt like they waited a long time to throw the yellow light, and I think that’s the reason I wasn’t more bummed about it than I was. To lose the Daytona 500 by six-thousandths of a second or whatever. It was is definitely heartbreaking, but they could have thrown the caution a bit earlier and made that margin bigger,” he said as per On3.

Alex Bowman will be hungry for the win going into the Atlanta Motor Speedway despite not having the best record on the track. It will be interesting to see how the #48 car performs on Sunday.
