Roger Penske Gives His Verdict on the Humongous $7.7 Billion Dollar Deal for NASCAR’s Media Rights

NASCAR is ready to take the next big leap into the future, as it forays into the world of online streaming. The announcement of the new broadcasting deal that amounts to a staggering $7.7 billion, and is set to come into effect from the 2025 season for a term of seven years, has taken the NASCAR world by storm and has raised the skeptical brows of many.
While there are naysayers who seem to harbor skepticism regarding the new deal, numerous NASCAR insiders have shown their appreciation regarding the same. Among them lies the name of Team Penske‘s owner. ‘The Captain’ seems to have posited his faith in the proposed deal which was apparent from an update on Twitter.

The last broadcasting deal that NASCAR signed was a decade back, for a term of ten years, and was split between FOX and NBC. The deal was closed at $820 million. While FOX was charged with broadcasting for the first half of 38 races, including the Clash and All-Stars Race, NBC and its other subsidiaries televised the playoffs and the showdown of the season.
However, this dominance by the two media giants is set to be met with two other competitors from the 2025 season as Amazon Prime and Warner Bros. Discovery are set to stream 10 races in total. This bifurcation of broadcasting has been met with hostility by many, citing the continuous switching of sites and the increased cost due to the subscription charges.

Nonetheless, among the few optimists, Roger Penske delivered his unflinching support for the new deal. In a tweet shared by NASCAR journalist Peter Stratta, Captain Penske asserted, “There’s a time period here where people are moving from linear television to streaming. If NASCAR wasn’t booming, they wouldn’t have gotten $7 billion.”
According to the new deal, NBC and FOX would be holding the lion’s share of 14 races each for telecasting, while TNT and Amazon would split the remaining 10 mid-season races.

However, Roger Penske was not the only veteran who saw a silver lining. Kenny Wallace also took a dig at critics to show his support for the deal.

It seems the new deal has found an avid advocate in the form of NASCAR veteran Kenny Wallace. The 60-year-old has conveyed his unequivocal support for the new endeavor on his social media.

To shut the critics and their disappointment with the upcoming deal, Wallace took to Twitter to settle the scores once and for all. He posted: “This is not the “old days”. save your complaints. Look at youR phone APPS. We all have (APPS GALORE). @FloRacing @dirtvision @RacingAmerica .. At least we have choices”.
NASCAR executives can finally breathe a sigh of relief as more people are coming forward to back what many have been slamming online. The new deal comes as an aftermath of the existing one’s expiration after the conclusion of the 2024 season. The stock car racing giant, to boost its viewership and increase its younger fanbase, followed suit after leagues like the NFL and NBA were seen tapping into the online streaming community.

Nevertheless, with that being said, the deal has displayed huge promises in its broadcasting structure as the sport tries to shed its traditional garb. However, the question arises: Will this be a successful endeavor? Well, only time holds the answers to it.
