Donnie Allison deems the Snowball Derby as the “best short track run”

The Snowball Derby continues to be one of the most cherished and coveted runs. This position exists simply because of the complexity and level of drivers it brings on board. Bobby Allison led the Alabama Gang after he brought over his brother, Donnie, over from Florida. They set up shop in Hueytown, Alabama, and operated out of the place from the early 1970s. By the time 1975 rolled around, the Allison brothers worked well together, and it showed at the Snowball derby.

Speaking about the event, Donnie Allison explained, “I was fortunate, I won a race there….it was always a big-time race. It had the best cars. Every year, the best of the best would show up. If you win that race, you can honestly get out and say, you beat the best”. Given how special the Derby has been for Allison, he even plans to give the place a visit in the upcoming season. Despite the chaos and controversy, The Alabama native’s flawless performance and unwavering focus secured a victory that remains etched in Snowball Derby lore.

Race day at the Snowball Derby was incredible for the Allison family. Both drivers shared the lead for over 200 laps after Bobby won the pole in qualifying. What made it even more special was that the two brothers beat some of the best racing drivers at the time. Three-time Cup Series-winning driver Darrell Waltrip was among the contenders in the race, but even he could not manage to beat the dominance of Donnie Allison. Not just Waltrip, but drivers like Richard Petty often participated in the event. While Allison’s win was immortalized, what became a bigger story at the time was the incident his brother got involved in with Ronnie Sanders.

Towards the closing laps, Bobby Allison got into a major altercation with Sanders. With only 10 laps to go, Bobby came near Sanders and instead of passing him, turned the car. This led to major damage and Sanders ended up losing his position. Just as this incident happened on the track, a caution came out, which left Sanders furious. What happened next is why this race is often termed infamous.
