A little white boy from Arkansas – this was the description of Austin Reaves for quite a long time. Until the Lakers decided to change his storyline. Of course, it was Reaves who took control and decided what narrative he wanted. Even so, the role Los Angeles has played in the current popularity and welcome he enjoys is undeniable.

And as his fame increases, fans are treated to more details about his personality and personal life. Not just as a player, but as a person. One such detail that has received quite a bit of spotlight is Reaves’ love for golf. It seems like the 25-year-old’s craze for the sport is such that he couldn’t care less about the ongoing Super Bowl mania!

The Super Bowl is pretty much the holy grail of the American sports spirit. Yet, Austin Reaves didn’t show even a glimmer of hesitance as he said, “I ain’t even watchin’ the Super Bowl, I’m golfing.”

The NBA is evolving to be quite a rival to the NFL in its own rights. But Commissioner Silver and his league still have a long way to go. But he surely is on the right path – IST, customized courts, LED court for All-Star Weekend, WNBA vs NBA challenge, and so on. More on that another time.

Going back to Reaves’ golf love, the NBA player who is synonymous with golf right now is Stephen Curry. From his UNDERRATED to roping his wife, Ayesha Curry into the sport, not a day goes by without at least a throwback post or tweet relating to the same. But Reaves begs to differ.

Joining the Zach Lowe Podcast late last year, Lowe asked him who he thinks the best golfer is among the NBA players. Without missing a beat, Reaves answers, “Me.” He provides the reason as to why he believes that. “I love golf so much, I’d go play Tiger. Obviously, I don’t have any expectation of winning that one . . . but I would love to play against Steph.”

This is the man who won the American Century Championship in July 2023. It is also known as the Super Bowl of Celebrity Golf. Yet, any golf discussion is not complete without “His Airness” Michael Jordan.

One take at a time

“Not only is there more to life than basketball, there’s a lot more to basketball than basketball” - Jackson had a simple philosophy when he was coaching the Lakers. He wanted everyone to succeed and grow in the service of something bigger than themselves. This is what struck me the most.
