Like every year in recent memory, the NBA All-Star Game’s lack of competitiveness became a hot topic of discussion this week. The NBA World was not happy with the All-Stars playing zero defense and combining for a staggering 397 points in Sunday’s game. With the game becoming nothing more than a three-pointer and dunk fest, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver faces a huge challenge of making the All-Star game more exciting.

Amid Silver’s struggles, legendary head coach Gregg Popovich gave a bold suggestion to fix the All-Star Game: “Add a few more slots.” Coach Pop believes every year, several great players get snubbed from the All-Star game because of a lack of slots. The Spurs head coach wants the NBA to increase the size of the roster to make the game more competitive and entertaining.

Coach Pop also claimed there are a lot of things going on during the All-Star Weekend that make the players less serious and more prone to injury. “The more it’s not serious as a heart attack, the more open you are of maybe somebody getting injured,” Popovich added.

Gregg Popovich is not the first person to suggest the league should increase All-Star slots. The idea has been floated around for a few years. However, Adam Silver shut down the idea during this year’s All-Star Weekend, “There is no plan now to add roster All-Star spots.”

Increasing the size of the All-Star team is a huge decision that cannot be made without proper assessment. The All-Star Game holds a historic significance in the NBA, and there is a chance increasing spots might take away from the importance of getting the All-Star nod.

Gregg Popovich is one of the most accomplished head coaches in NBA history. He has even coached the All-Star Game 4 times in his career. So, his suggestion to improve the All-Star Game cannot be taken lightly. However, increasing All-Star slots might not help make the game more competitive. Adam Silver revealed on JJ Redick’s Podcast a few months ago that the players need to follow a set routine to lock in for a game. And that is hard to attain during the All-Star Weekend festivities.
