After an infuriating loss to the Toronto Raptors, questions opened up about the Golden State Warriors. Namely, the need for a change in the roster. The team has currently lost four of their last five games. While open to a trade, Stephen Curry doesn’t want the team to be “reckless”.
However, what would the team define as being so? What if they had a chance to trade for a highly productive star, but it meant offloading one of their core veterans?
The veteran in question happens to be Draymond Green. The prospect is Zion Williamson. After spending extended time on the sidelines, the remainder of the Pelicans’ cornerstone’s contract became non-guaranteed. The friendly deal presents itself to be a lure for several teams. With the Bay needing a spark, Anthony Slater discussed the possibility of them making a move.

Terming it to be a “hail mary”, the crew spoke about it needing either Green or Andrew Wiggins in the package to match salaries. Thus far, though, the Warriors haven’t made any moves. “They have not shown a willingness to this point. I’ll just say that. Like again, I think those type of deals happen very cloaked,” Slater said about the same.

The guest on the show, Nate Duncan, though wasn’t sure there was a choice. He feels the Warriors would only have the option to trade Draymond Green. “I mean, because Zion and Draymond can’t play together, obviously. That wouldn’t be great. You need Wiggins next to Zion for sure to get more defense” he said. And while he believes, it would be an audacious attempt to be competitive, Duncan doesn’t dismiss the slight chances of it working.
“I don’t know who the heck plays center for you. If you get Zion Williamson, but he is a talent. That at least is a Hail Mary that has a chance of at least landing in the end zone. Probably incomplete, but it lands in the end zone. Some of these other ones are Hail Mary from the five-yard line that gets you to the opposing 45-yard line and probably isn’t even going to get caught then,” he said on Warriors Plus Minus.
But regardless of how tantalizing it might be, does it make sense?

Trading Draymond for Zion: A genius move or a reckless gamble for the Warriors' future?

The Warriors probably won’t make a play for Zion Williamson
Several risks come with trading for Williamson, which at this point Stephen Curry and the Warriors can’t afford. Firstly, he has sat out more games than played since being drafted. His unavailability could potentially destroy the entire purpose of pulling off such a bold move, wasting Curry’s last few years’ window to compete for a championship.

Moreover, his style of play is present with Jonathan Kuminga. They don’t require a slashing forward that can produce high-volume points. The system commands either a compact defender or a shooter. So far, Williamson has shown no signs of growing into that mold.
On the other hand, although Draymond Green is aging, he remains an integral piece to the Warriors competing for a championship. He is the defensive anchor who manages the troops on the floor and is a resounding voice in the locker room. In addition, while he doesn’t have the instinct to score first, his 36% three-point shooting provides Kerr with the spacing he is after.
Green being close to turning 35 hasn’t stopped him from being a positive component within the Warriors’ ranks. His chemistry besides Stephen Curry is irreplaceable. And if they are to trade for Green, it would probably be for someone who holds the playmaking abilities of the former DPOY.

However, Duncan may have recognized the target area. A true center could bring an encouraging change in dynamic for the Warriors who are lacking in defense in recent games. There are several options out in the market who they could make a play for. But as far as Zion Williamson is concerned, if it means sacrificing Draymond Green, their current indication is most likely their final call.
