The 2023-24 season has been a struggle for everyone involved with the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors dynasty, who have won four NBA titles in the last nine seasons, have looked like a shell of their once formidable selves. Going into the season, the Warriors fans had huge expectations, but their season hasn’t gone according to plan. With the season reaching its halfway stage, the Warriors currently languish outside the playoff spots in the Western Conference.

The Warriors are in dire need of a roster overhaul and with the trade deadline fast approaching, the Dubs’ hierarchy needs to act decisively in order to improve their roster. Without such moves, their ambitious preseason aspirations for an NBA title may seem increasingly elusive.

In recent weeks, the Warriors have been linked with Washington Wizards’ forward, Kyle Kuzma. Kuzma has played and started in every Wizard’s game and is recording career-high averages of 21.8 points and 4.4 assists, along with 6.5 rebounds this season. It’s obvious why the Dubs have been linked with Kuzma – he provides size and rebounding, which they severely lack right now. Furthermore, Kuzma could prove to be an excellent secondary scorer in the Warriors’ rotation.

However, any trade for Kuzma will not include Chris Paul. The veteran point guard isn’t eligible to be traded because the Warriors acquired him this offseason. The potential trade for Kuzma would have to be centered around either Andrew Wiggins or youngsters like Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody. However, there’s a high likelihood that other teams could offer a better trade package for Kuzma. But if the Dubs get lucky and the Wizards decide to agree to their trade offer, could Kuzma’s addition catapult the Warriors into the playoffs?

Would Kuzma’s acquisition transform the Warriors’ fortunes?

Acquiring Kyle Kuzma would undoubtedly enhance the Warriors’ roster if they choose to make the trade. He has blossomed into a lethal scorer in Washington. However, at times, he could prove to be very inefficient. Kuzma has recorded a field-goal percentage of 45.7%. Whereas he has shot 33.8% from beyond the arc.

While Kuzma solves some weaknesses within the Dubs’ roster, his fit with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson is also questionable. There is also a question mark regarding how Kuzma would adjust to receiving fewer opportunities to handle the ball. Moreover, Kuzma has been abysmal defensively this season, and defense has been one of the main problem areas for the Warriors this season. While Kuzma’s acquisition would likely improve their playoff prospects, it won’t miraculously transform them into title challengers.
