And with recent loss in the FIBA World Cup, the USA standing as a basketball juggernaut has been called into question.

But players like Zion Williamson and Ja Morant are in with a shout for the MVP title. As some former players think that the two Americans can replicate Derrick Rose’s 2011 form.

D-Rose’s Frightening Legacy

Derrick Rose, often referred to as “D-Rose,” boasts an NBA legacy defined by his incredible talent. The Chicago Bulls drafted him as the first overall pick in 2008 and swiftly became the league MVP in 2011. Derrick Rose’s MVP season in 2011 was a historic achievement. As the youngest player to win the award, he led the Chicago Bulls with incredible speed, scoring, and playmaking. Averaging 25 points and 7.7 assists per game, Rose reinvigorated the franchise, making him a symbol of hope and excellence in the ‘Windy City’.

Whenever D-Rose came down the court in full tilt, he struck fear into opposing defenses. He was just too fast and crafty for opposing defenders. Former Knick Brandon Jennings reminisced about D-Rose’s 2010-11 MVP season on the Gil’s Arena podcast. He said, “I still got nightmares of that. Four times a year”.

The Memphis Grizzlies have become title contenders in recent years and Ja Morant has been the main reason. But, Morant found himself in hot water after flashing a firearm on an Instagram video which led to a 25-game suspension. The Grizzlies have signed Derrick Rose for the 2023-24 season in order to cover for Ja and provide veteran leadership.
