Kyle Lowry Trade Not the Last Move for Hornets as Major Uncertainty Clouds Future After Terry Rozier Loss

The Miami Heat just completed a significant trade which sees them part ways with Kyle Lowry and a 2027 first-round draft pick in return for Charlotte Hornets’ guard Terry Rozier. The 29-year-old guard provides a significant upgrade on Miami’s current options at the point guard position. Meanwhile, Kyle Lowry provides veteran leadership to a young and rebuilding Hornets’ side. Moreover, his $29 million expiring contract is also of huge value for title-challenging teams.
According to reliable ESPN journalist Adrian Wojnarowski, “The Hornets aren’t done dealing yet and plan to continue accumulating future assets ahead of the February 8th trade deadline.” With Lowry and Gordon Hayward, the Hornets have two players with immense playoff experience and title-contending teams could try to acquire them before the trade deadline on 8th February.

This could be just the beginning of a massive roster clear-out, potentially involving players such as Hayward and recently acquired Lowry. As per reports by Evan Sidery, “The Hornets are planning to build around young players LaMelo Ball and rookie Brandon Miller and gather up draft assets and young players in potential deals.”

The Hornets have endured an abysmal season so far. They currently occupy the 13th spot in the Eastern Conference standings, having won just 10 games and losing another 31 games. Given the current state and caliber of the roster, going into a rebuild seems to be the right option. But will it guarantee success in the future?

Have the Hornets made the right decision?
Yes, the Charlotte Hornets have made the right decision, because with Terry Rozier on the roster, the team wasn’t contending for a playoff spot. Although the Hornets have parted ways with one of their key players, they’ve acquired a savvy veteran in Kyle Lowry, who could be flipped for further draft picks and young players.

Before the start of the 2023-24 season, the Hornets possessed the third youngest team in the league, with an average age of 24.28. The Hornets have a promising future if they can nurture and develop their young talents like LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller, and Mark Williams, all of whom are under the age of 23. However, despite the promising future, the Hornets’ hierarchy would have to be opportunistic in order to release the current potential of a very young roster.
