Bronny James has been under a magnifying glass since the moment his name was called on draft night. He has faced immense pressure, sky-high expectations and unrelenting criticism ever since. But now, after a standout performance in the 2025 NBA Summer League, those closest to the James family are speaking up. And not just about his growth, also about the unfair weight he’s had to carry.

Appearing on The Tylil Show, Rich Paul and Tylil James shed light on what Bronny’s really been facing behind the scenes. For the first time, they publicly acknowledged how harshly he’s been judged, and how that judgment has overlooked his actual development.

Paul spoke candidly about James’ development during his first year in the NBA. He said Bronny “took a real jump,” pointing out his noticeable improvement, especially compared to where he started. Bronny averaged 14.3 points on 47.6% shooting, with 3.8 assists and 2.8 rebounds across four games. But Paul also emphasized that this kind of progress should be expected for any young player going through what Bronny did.

Entering the NBA is a major adjustment. Paul explained that as players are “thrown into the fire,” they’re suddenly expected to perform in a fast, physical, high-pressure environment. The speed and physicality of an A-level athlete are completely different from what players are used to. Paul’s point was that improvement comes with effort. If a player puts in the work, they’ll make progress, just like Bronny did.

Paul added, “I thought Bronny took a jump this year…The speed is different, the physicality is different, the pace is different. So now it takes time. So if you put the work in, you’ll see guys take a jump. In any sport.”

Paul even compared Bronny’s progression to NFL standout Terrion Arnold. He mentioned how the Detroit Lions’ defensive backs coach recently said Arnold “took a step” after starting last season. Pointing to that growth as a parallel to Bronny’s, he claimed that despite being a first-year NBA player, Bronny showed real signs of improvement during Summer League. But Paul made it clear: there’s still a long road ahead.

Tylil James echoed the sentiment, calling out the lazy narrative that Bronny is only in the league because of his last name. He gave Bronny props for his Summer League performance and highlighted a clip of LeBron James, stating he’s never told any coach how to coach Bronny or Bryce. LeBron has let his sons earn their way without interference. Paul backed up Tylil’s take with a straightforward reminder: “You know basketball, you know if the game is being played the right way or not.”

Translation: real hoopers can tell Bronny belongs. It’s not about hype or headlines anymore. Bronny is proving he deserves to be here, and this summer showed he’s finally starting to turn the corner.

Can Bronny James carve his own legacy, or will he always be in LeBron's shadow?

Bronny’s path to the rotation starts with conditioning

As Bronny James gears up for his second NBA season. Lakers head coach JJ Redick is setting a firm standard for what it will take for him to earn a real spot in the rotation. Redick recently emphasized that Bronny must be active and impactful on every possession, whether offensively or defensively. He pointed out that Bronny has already shown flashes of high-level play, but to truly break through, it all comes down to cardio fitness.

Redick isn’t just talking about effort, he wants Bronny to study and emulate players like T.J. McConnell from the Pacers and Davion Mitchell from the Heat. Both are known for their relentless two-way energy. They’re not stars by name, but they impact games every night through hustle, defense, and high stamina. That’s the model Redick wants Bronny to follow.

The expectation is simple but demanding: get in elite shape, play hard every game, and stay consistent. That level of stamina is what separates role players from reliable contributors. And it’s something Bronny hasn’t fully achieved yet, majorly due to what he’s been through.
