“We could, on any given night, beat any team in the NBA. And then, on any given night, we could get our a** kicked by any team in the NBA.” These were the remarks of a frustrated LeBron James after the Lakers succumbed to their 25th defeat of the season against an out-of-sorts Atlanta Hawks side. Amid the 4x champion’s trade rumors, the Lakers have since pulled off some surprising but crucial results. Their latest win over a rampant New York Knicks team on a 9-game winning streak being the cherry on top.

The Lakers defeated the Knicks in Madison Square Garden 113-105 on Saturday night. LeBron played a starring role in the victory, as he led the Lakers in scoring with 24 points, along with 5 assists and 5 rebounds. Despite entering the 4th quarter leading 86-80, the Knicks failed to capitalize on it as the Lakers completely shut down their offense. New York missed 11 straight shots while they went scoreless for more than 7 minutes in the final quarter.

Even though Anthony Davis only had 12 points on the night, he was the catalyst behind the stifling Lakers defense in the fourth. He finished with 18 rebounds and 5 blocks. With Julius Randle and OG Anunoby both on the treatment table, Jalen Brunson had to carry the team on his back, as he had done during the winning streak. Despite the Lakers’ best efforts to slow him down by double-teaming him, Brunson still finished with 36 points and 10 assists. However, it wasn’t enough.

For the Lakers, this game came after their stunning victory over the top-seeded Boston Celtics on February 1st without the likes of LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Austin Reaves (32 points), D’Angelo Russell (16 points), and Rui Hachimura (15 points) all rose to the occasion in the absence of their star players. But it hasn’t stopped the chatter around the Lakers, with the trade deadline looming.

In recent weeks, LeBron has cut an extremely disgruntled figure due to the Lakers’ inability to win games consistently. They currently languish in the 9th spot of the Western Conference standings, with a 26-25 record. Nevertheless, no one expected LeBron and the Lakers to part ways mid-season. But trade speculations surrounding him reached a fever pitch when Bron posted an hourglass emoji on his X handle on 31st January, just eight days before the trade deadline.

However, LeBron’s agent and longtime friend Rich Paul came out and publicly swatted down any such trade rumors. He told ESPN, “LeBron won’t be traded, and we aren’t asking to be.” Despite the positive string of results for the Lakers, one is forced to wonder: has the Lakers’ hierarchy let LeBron down, or is it the other way around?

Has the Lakers’ management fallen short of meeting LeBron’s lofty standards?

On the outside, looking in, LeBron’s time with the Lakers is undeniably successful. Within just two seasons of joining, James guided the Lakers to their 17th NBA title in 2020. Additionally, the Lakers won the inaugural In-Season tournament, with LeBron being named the tournament MVP just a couple of months ago. However, many believe they could have achieved much more than just one NBA title if the Lakers’ hierarchy had been more proactive and sensible in their decision-making.

The Lakers had expressed interest in acquiring Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby, but both players were ultimately traded to the Indiana Pacers and the New York Knicks, respectively. In recent weeks, the Lakers have been linked with Atlanta Hawks’ guard Dejounte Murray, and as per reports, the Hawks have already rejected a trade offer for the guard.

But with the trade deadline fast approaching, L.A. needs to expedite a potential trade that’s currently in the works. The urgency stems from the Lakers’ pressing need for additions in order to build on last season’s Conference Finals performance.

Underlying statistics show the extent to which the Lakers have underperformed. They rank 20th in the NBA in terms of offensive rating, registering a rating of 114.1. Their defensive performance is equally subpar, ranking 14th in defensive rating with a score of 115.1. Furthermore, they possess the 12th-worst net rating in the league, posting a rating of -1.0. With the Lakers faltering at the business end of the season, this season seems more like a somber farewell tour for King James rather than a celebratory last dance.

What does the future have in store for LeBron?

LeBron James has a player option on his contract with the Lakers worth around $51.4 million for the 2024-25 season. However, James stated that he has yet to determine his future and will make a decision in the offseason after holding talks with the Lakers. During Saturday’s shoot-around before the Lakers’ game against the New York Knicks, when quizzed about his decision regarding the option, James replied by saying, “No.” LeBron also remained mum about his reasoning behind the hourglass tweet.

James’ weird antics, coupled with his dicey contract situation, have cast a shadow of uncertainty over his immediate future. Moreover, the Lakers’ lackluster performances this season also don’t help their case in keeping hold of LeBron. Alternatively, New York has emerged as a potential destination for LeBron in the 2024-25 season. After all, the Knicks have been perennially linked with LeBron during his free agency periods in both 2010 and 2018.

Back in the summer of 2010, James planned on joining the Knicks. However, after a “disaster” meeting with the team’s owners, James opted against the idea and joined the Miami Heat instead. According to popular sports writer Bill Simmons, “From everyone I’ve talked to in the know since then, it’s clear that the Knicks were the first choice (for LeBron). It was basically the Knicks’ to lose, and they just couldn’t stay out of their own way… They didn’t have anything prepared… It just couldn’t have gone worse by all accounts. It was a disaster.” 

In a recent interview, LeBron substantiated Simmons’ claims. He said, “During my free agency period in 2010, it was one of the teams that I looked at. So I’ve had that thought in my career.”

With LeBron in search of his legacy-defining fifth NBA title, the New York Knicks might present an ideal opportunity for him. Considering James has secured a championship in every team he has played, and with the Knicks not winning a title since 1973, Bron could just be the missing piece in the puzzle.

Would acquiring LeBron take the Knicks to the next level?

The Knicks have been one of the standout teams of the 2023-24 season. They currently occupy the 4th spot in the Eastern Conference standings, with a 32-18 record. They are on pace to win 53 regular-season games, which will be their most since the 1992-93 season. The Knicks possess a roster poised to make an impact in the title race for the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, they lack a true superstar who could elevate them to the next level. In recent seasons, the Knicks have been linked with numerous superstar free agents and disgruntled stars. So, why not consider LeBron?

A core group of players consisting of the likes of Jalen Brunson, Julius Randle, LeBron James, and OG Anunoby would pose a daunting task for even the best teams in the league. LeBron’s otherworldly basketball IQ, playmaking, and immense experience of postseason basketball will genuinely make a telling difference. Currently, the Knicks are just one of three teams to possess a top-10 defense and offense in the league. The other two teams sharing this distinction are the title-favorites Celtics and the OKC Thunder. So, with LeBron on the roster, the Knicks will become a scary proposition to face.

For the time being, LeBron has kept the basketball community in suspense about his future. But he has already dropped a hint as to where his future lies. In an interview with ESPN, LeBron said, “I need to be on the floor with my boy, I got to be on the floor with Bronny. Either in the same uniform or a matchup against him.”

Bronny is eligible for the 2024 NBA Draft, which takes place on 26th-27th June, just three days before LeBron’s player option expires. Consequently, we may soon receive clarity on where LeBron’s future lies.
