The official Instagram account of the Golden State Warriors recently uploaded a reel. It featured the team’s shooting guard, Moses Moody, sitting down and reflecting on a pivotal moment that took place when he was in high school. Through archived footage, viewers got a glimpse of a younger Moody standing on the sidelines of his high school basketball court. As the other people in the stands looked on, the future NBA player stated his desire to perform an original poem titled “He Beat the Streets”.

Moving back to the present, the player explained how the poem was his senior speech, a task that was asked to be prepared by every one of his classmates.

As Moses Moody’s video started to make the rounds of the internet, it didn’t take long for Warriors fans to get infatuated with the player’s message and state their praise about it. While “He Beat the Streets” seemed to resonate with many of the viewers and followers of the player, it also seemed to have an impact on the other NBA players as well.

Soon after the reel was uploaded, it caught the attention of 2022 NBA Finals MVP Stephen Curry. Taking to the comments section, the Warriors star highlighted his support through a message that stated “Real @mosesmoody”, accompanied by a ‘raised hands’ emoji.

The team’s power forward Draymond Green shared the reel on his story for his 4.1 Million followers, whilst adding a caption that read “This was special @mosesmoody”. Brandin Podziemski, the Warriors shooting guard, who was selected to the team just two years after Moody, sent his flowers on X (formerly Twitter) by writing “This powerful @mosesmoody”, accompanied by a handshake emoji.

What was the message highlighted by Moses Moody through “He Beat the Streets”

“The poem I wrote in high school is my perspective on different black experiences” Moody recalled during his message. As the then-student started to recite his story, he added a certain degree of depth to his message by mentioning examples from his own experience. By mentioning how his “uncle found himself in max incarceration”, Moody highlighted how sometimes people had to place aside their “undone infatuation with pride” to survive in an unknown situation. Moody stated that his uncle would have been someone with his dreams and aspirations, but his ability to achieve the same would have taken a steep drop once he was released from prison.

The future Warriors star didn’t realize until he was older that his uncle possessed a rage. A rage that came up from being “locked up in a cage” for 18 years. By using his uncle as a metaphor, Moody highlighted the struggles faced by those people who were locked up at a young age and had to struggle to make a living once they got out.

“That fire’s kind of taken away from them at a young age,” Moody exclaimed. “My uncle had the heart of a soldier, the aggression of a prizefighter. Just no one taught him what to fight for”. He stated that if only his uncle had received the right mentorship, the right influence, and guidance, he could have grown up to become someone really special.

By bringing the theme of racism forward, Moody highlighted through his poem that the youth of his age, in their journey of life, need to look out and learn from the experiences of the people who came before them. Only then will people manage to do the impossible, stand on their “own two feet” and emerge as a flower growing from the concrete.

“After this long journey, scratched up, cut up, you’ve been battling this, had to sacrifice this… but that young man left standing on his own two feet, has done the impossible,” Moddy stated as the video drew to a conclusion.
