Years before becoming a 4x NBA champion and 2x regular season MVP of the league, Stephen Curry was just another high-school prospect in the state of North Carolina. With a barely 6′ ft lean frame Curry was not the most touted prospect going into college. However, he caught a big break after a college coach agreed to give him a spot on the roster.

Stephen Curry was not attracting much attention with his play on the court in high school. Moreover, his frame and lack of athleticism made the country’s top programs pass up on him. However, Curry, fortunately, got an offer from the Davidson Wildcats at the last minute. Moreover, his mother, Sonya Curry, had an emotional exchange with the coach on their first meeting.
Mother Sonya was left in tears after hearing Coach’s comment on Stephen Curry
Stephen Curry is the son of former NBA player Dell Curry and Sonya Curry. Growing up, in the absence of Dell, Sonya played an integral role in the development of the Curry boys (Steph and Seth). To this day, she continues to be a pillar of support for them and is their biggest fan during NBA games.
In a recent interview, Sonya Curry revealed her emotional state during the ‘nerve wrecking’ college recruitment process of her son. She reflected on her exchange with Curry’s college coach. After months of not getting an offer, Curry finally got an opportunity from coach Bob McKillop to play for the Davidson Wildcats.

When coach McKillop came to the Curry household to meet with the parents, Sonya had an emotional exchange with him. After thanking him for the opportunity, Sonya offered to ‘fatten’ her son up before the college season began. However, coach McKillop’s humbly declined and said, “I’ll take him just the way he is.”?Those words left Sonya in tears.?
Curry’s arduous journey to the NBA
Curry’s journey to NBA was not an easy road despite being the son of an NBA player. In his high-school campaign, Curry failed to make it to the nation’s top programs. Moreover, he wasn’t getting any calls from other big schools. However, he got an offer to play for the Davidson Wildcats at the last minute. Curry made the best of his days at Davidson.

In his three years with the Wildcats, the future Dubs superstar dominated the college scene and had an impressive average of 25.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.7 assists. He won 2x Southern player of the year (SPOY) and topped several leaderboards for points, assists, and steals. Davidson retired his jersey earlier this year. Curry’s performance in college yielded him a spot in the NBA draft. In 2009, the Golden State Warriors picked him as the 7th overall pick in round 1 and the rest is history.
