After four years of association, it looks like things are coming to a halt in the relationship between the 76ers and Ben Simmons. The 25-year-old has reportedly made it clear that he wishes to never return to Philadelphia. Thus, he will have to find a new home in the NBA ahead of the new season. One of the alleged reasons for his exit, is the emerging belief that he wasn’t on the best of terms with teammate Joel Embiid. But where did it all go wrong for Simmons?
Ben Simmons and 76ers’ irreparable equation
Right throughout the 2020-21 season, there was increased pressure of performance on Simmons from his team and the fans. After a strenuous campaign, numerous reports emerged that the equation between the player and the team was very bad. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the All-star met with the owner and management and informed them that he does not wish to return to training. His growing impatience with the team and apparent rift with star player Joel Embiid reportedly pushed him over the line.

In the 2021 Eastern Conference semifinal, the 76ers lost to the Atlanta Hawks. In the series, Simmons’ inefficiency caused the coach to bench him for long stretches of key plays. He lacked confidence, and did not earn the faith of the fans either. Moreover, some things were said within the team which could’ve been avoided. After four years at ‘Philly’, during which he made two All-defensive sides, it was time for him to bid adieu to the franchise.

It was quite evident towards the dying stages, that the connection between star duo of Simmons and Embiid wasn’t the greatest. Both of them lacked coordination and communication many-a-time. And now, it seems like things have hit rock bottom for them. According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, Simmons does not wish to play along with Embiid anymore.

In a latest report, Amick has stated how Ben Simmons wants a change of environment to fit his style. “As he [Ben Simmons] sees it, sources say, the organisation’s choice to build its basketball ecosystem around [Joel] Embiid’s style simply isn’t conducive to the way he needs to play.”
